On my first trip to Val d'Isere (in 1988 when I was young and stupid, as opposed to just stupid) I spied the start hut and of course, had to saunter over to launch myself down the OK. Picking up speed nicely on the gentle top bit I was just coming over the first rise when ....... Shocked a mogul field (hadn't snowed for weeks beforehand iirc). Cue interesting rescue manouevres rolling eyes

I've not timed myself over the whole course but have straight lined bits where traffic has allowed. The compression bit towards the bottom is amazing, it doesn't look much on the telly but it just about knocks you over flat, god knows what it's like at proper speeds.

David Murdoch, there was some talk of it before FIS agreed this year's WC timetable, but apparently it will take place (snow gods willing).

Jacques, Silvano Beltrametti was a Swiss downhill skier who is now unfortunately paraplegic after a horrendous crash on the OK in 2001 Sad

Correct. He was a 19 year old Swiss star and bright light for the struggling Swiss team. He crashed off the OK course during a training run, scissoring through two race barriers like paper with the razor sharp edges of his skis and landed in rocky terrain as there was no snow off the piste at that time. With the new ski technology, racers were using plates on downhill skis as short as 205 cm some 20 cm shorter than a few years earlier. The new skis were faster and could hold the arcs on edge. Unfortunately, downhill also requires riding a flat ski and at that length they tend to be not as stable especially at speeds of 140 km/H. His accident brought about a change to the minimum ski length and radius for downhill (now 215 cm/45 m + radius). Interestingly, almost everybody is now skiing on the minimum length of 215 cm.
