Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Pistie Beasties - What do you call them ?

Pisten Bully, Piste machine, piste basher, rat track etc etc. What do you call them?

Somebody in the crowd a skied with years ago came out with "Pistie Beastie" and it's always stuck with me. In fact my kids now think this is the proper name for them, and I've seen some puzzled expressions when people have heard them refer to them !.

Are there any other proper or improper names for them ?

The erudite members of another ski forum call them 'snow bison': an apt name for massive powerful beasts that graze snowy pastures, often nocturnally.

Snow bison hibernate in summer, by the way.

Indeed I saw one such creature foundering on a hill on Monday having hurt it's right hand legs (lost a track) and it seemed to be waiting patiently for the vet (Mechanic) to come to its assistance, I went to take a picture of it from the train window only to discover that my digital camera was no longer working properly, could this be some in built defence mechanism, peculiar to these creatures that is designed to save them from embaressment Question

If I've correctly understood what the subject is...I call those the usual name:
Snow Cats, or simply Cats. ("Gatti delle nevi" or "Gatti"...their official name here is "mezzi battipista")

I call them Pistie Beasties as well. I think all my friends do as well (but that's probably my fault). Excellent name for them.

I bought a toy one in Alpe D a few weeks ago with the intention of giving it to my nephew. But being the big kid I am, I kept it, so you can guarantee that after a bottle of wine on a friday night the piste basher is on carpet duty! Very Happy

No, Sam hasn't had a ride yet. He's green with envy as his friend has not only been in a pistie beastie but on a snowmobile as well.
