Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Booking our car ferry

homphomp,

Never heard of a stand-in.. Vessels are chartered for a quite a period of time and have the client refit so this would be a P&O ship to all intents and purposes so I can't explain a shabby ship at all. Compared to other carriers P&O aren't shabby IME. The fleet has decreased down to 6 in the last few years so they haven't needed a 'stand-in'

Beware of p and o and taking a different time ferry to the one booked they charge excessivley for this now, £60.00 to leave two hours earlier than booked!

nessy, that was the way that both our satnav and viaMichelin site gave us at the time. . We may have gone that way for another reason though, possibly the hotel?. We have used Dunkerque a couple of times, but not for about 2 years now. I just checked it out last night, and it still didn't use the RN.

brock, Heading to Dover last Saturday we phoned P&O to see if we could get on the 45 minutes earlier ferry. The answer was yes for 115 quid! But they have got a lot cheaper just recently. Previously Seafrance were always cheaper for returns startign at Calais.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Welcome to snowHeads!

Eurotunnel charge £30 to change to a different service (if you have the cheapest tickets, with no built-in flexibility).

The couple of times I've used P&O I've arrived early and been put on the first ferry out without any mention of a surcharge - I've not been earlier than the crossing before the one I'm booked on so maybe that's the scope of their generosity. These were also in November so low season.

Yes, definitely a P&O boat, no question about that...I just thought it might be one that normally runs a different route and was transferred to Dover to cover for an annual inspection of one of their normal fleet? Possibly not...I've no idea how they manage these things normally...except for Speedferries who just cancelled our crossing without a by your leave when they put Speed1 in for inspection and then were surprised when I was a bit miffed!

rob@rar.org.uk, we have done this with eurotunnel, and have never had to pay the extra surcharge . We have always been put on an earlier crossing, provided we're within 2 hours of our booked crossing. We found going to a manned desk rather than the automated ones are best.

Helen Beaumont, I've done it a couple of times, once a day earlier than we'd booked and that's when I had to pay the surcharge. If it is quite close to our booked departure time we've always been put onto the next train without any fee.

Helen Beaumont, just turned up, although I knew about the fee for changing departure time before we arrived at Calais. I suppose we might have had a problem if every single train was fully booked, but I think this is rarely the case.

geetee, thanks for that link. I had been alerted to the extra points in my clubcard mailings - I must be a sucker for all these Tesco deals, but I swear I never buy anything I wouldn't buy anyway PLUS it's mostly things on special offer.

nessy, we were told last time we sailed on P&O that on the day they will let you on one ferry either side of your sailing free of charge - subject to there being space.

Eurotunnel have changed all their tickets now and I believe that you can change upto 2 hours either before or after scheduled time at no cost.

Admit I haven't used ferries since before the Chunnel was open, but have found the Chunnel to be so good that wouldn't change. For skiing we cross Thurs afternoon and stay in Calais, an early start gets us to Lyon on Friday, meaning ski resort by Sat lunchtime. I know you can do it in a day, but prefer to extend the holiday.

Boris,

I'm the exact opposite, once I'm going, I prefer to get there. Calais to Dijon in 4 hrs and most French resorts in another 4 or less. The pains are the last stages of the journey past Moutier and Lyon IMV

Actually ended up booking P & O despite me slagging off their onboard food.

Looked on a credit card statement and we've managed to accumulate over 8,000 airmiles, booked the ferry with airmiles direct using 1,200 of them.
