Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Warm dry winter predicted for Western Europe - Oh no its not....!

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
The Met office 3 month forecast predicts a likely warmer and dryer time for the UK and southern Alps, with no opinion expressed about the western Alps. Lets hope its a wrong prediction! Puzzled

Martin Nicholas, Easiski's French link said there would be abundant precipitation.

Is there any evaluation of how accurate these long range predictions are?

La Meteo gives some interesting predictions even further ahead than the met office, which look likely for a wetter but warmer start to the season in the Alps. As for accuracy - the disclaimers say that these are experimental modles with low reliability. So 2 models, 2 conflicting answers. We're no further forward Sad . I did like those snowy webcams in Lech / Zurs though snowHead

Well Well Well, the Met office has changed its mind and fallen in with Meteo France that it will in all likelihood be a wetter and averagely cold winter this winter - sounds good to me snowHead snowHead

"the situation is now finely balanced with approximately even chance that the winter will be colder or warmer than average"

Most conclusive then.... Laughing

Yep a bit of good news. The MetO experimental long range model got it pretty well right last year - cold and dry. The model for this winter (Dec - Feb) is suggesting a likelihood for a normal winter with the odds then split between warmer or cooler. If I've understood it correctly it means that there is a 70% chance that it will NOT be warmer than normal. If so thats great news.

They are also hinting at colder weather in late winter which for the MetO means February, although winter in the UK these days often doesn't start until March !

Good news also for the Alps with a wetter winter forecast, so hopefully no prolonged drought and more frequent snowfalls, at least high up.

All in all a reasonable forecast and a reason to be optimistic. Little Angel

It could of course always change, the wrong way naturally, but at the moment its a bit of good news as we go into the Autumn.

It's worth noting that since the first forecast, the El Nino forceast has been changed by NOAA (I *think* it's them who do those forecasts), which *might* account for the change. However, they can only forecast based on current situation so as time moves on, forecasts can be refined.

Didn't see the maps linked to above, so just in case anyone's missed them: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/seasonal/winter2006_7/europe.html
