Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski Testing:

Your condition is most important. Are you tired, hungover, skiing well/badly, injured.

Snow conditions will effect your ability combined with your condition.

Ski condition will effect your judgement. If a ski is badly prepared, it will ski badly. Bad edge and wax preparation.

Your expectations should be neutral, bias towards a particular brand may effect your opinion, have an open mind.

What are your referances. How different is the ski to that you are used to? If greatly, it may take a little more time to discover the tested skis properties.

Anyone care to add to this?

Temperature (and are you comfortably and suitably dressed for it)
Amount of sunlight (if outdoors) - if it's a sunny day, you're more likely to be smiling than if it is very overcast.

Socks, boots, bindings: if the interface is poor, then the test is going to be difficult.

Choose a slope you know rather than one you don't

A bit of side slipping & braquage to start with can give a good idea of the ski's tune. Braquage is also good in ensuring that you're properly centred & to see how the ski handles slow speed manoeuvres.

If you usually ski with a backpack full of gear then test wearing it.

Only test skis that match yer boots wink

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

What's "braquage"?

Hungover would probably be a good state to test ski's in for me, as that's how I tend to ski 99% of mornings anyway Little Angel

Shouldn't all test skis come with a plain topsheet?

Sharkymark, it's an old term for pivoting the skis while flat on their bases. You'll find that spyderjon and little tiger like to use it. Most other people just look puzzled!

Sharkymark, Also known in N.America as pivot slips. Starting across the slope the idea is to go down the slope at a constant slow speed in a 'ski length' corridor, alternatively turning the skis 180 degrees across the slope.

Wear The Fox Hat, Cool. Warren Smith is a big fan of braquage as an ankle flexing & thigh steering exercise.

Masque, Not really as the skis have to be pretty flat to pivot them.

The trick is not to take a mountainful of snow with you, like you bulldozers do Wink

I'm sure it isn't the only exercise he uses.
