Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Long weekend for group 1 hour from Innsbruck

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hello all,

Need to draw from the combined wisdom of the group.

Am organising a long weekend ski trip, probably fly out Friday, fly back Monday for a group of 10 - 12. Thinking fly into Innsbruck and then a transfer of no more than 80 minutes, so Mayrhofen, Solden, Ischgl?

A place that can do self catering with 5 to 6 rooms, all twins. Good Apres, mix of slopes, probably needs to have a spa place in the resort for the non skiers.

Any ideas?

Or maybe there is another airport we haven't considered?

All ideas very much appreciated Very Happy

@kosciosco, would be -much- easier if you would plan Saturday-Tuesday.

Mayrhofen would hit everything you're after i think.

With a private transfer you're fine on timings, plenty of accommodation options.

Can't think of a reason it wouldn't do what you're after.

Because most accommodations like to rent their property out Saturday to Saturday, so if they rent out for a shorter period then your initial Friday to Monday suggestion means that there are two weeks where they can't offer a full week to other customers, whereas if you go Saturday to Tuesday there's only one week affected where they can't offer a full week to other customers.

OK, that’s good to know, so if we went out Saturday and came back Wednesday that would be even better.

Only ever done full weeks so this is a complete mystery to me

I think the Hof is the easiest for you though not sure there are a massive number of SC apts in town.

However, if you need a non-standard accommodation span, and are struggling to find it in resort (probably would be fine in January tbh), city hotels in Innsbruck would definitely accommodate you, and then you could ski a different resort each day, by car or public transport.

Agree about starting on a Saturday. Even so it will be best to start looking asap (though many accommodation providers will hold out for a week). I would suggest St Anton as transfers are so easy from Innsbruck, the station is in the middle of the village, train every two hours from Innsbruck. Best option looking for accommodation is the local tourist office they all run accommodation finder services, online and in English. AirBnB, Booking .com etc not very popular in Austria. You might try the ALPtyrol apartments in St Anton they are directly opposite the station, in the middle of the village, I have had a part week there in the past.

Another vote for Mayrhofen, our boys' trip went there for years on aq 4 night basis, although B & B or HB. Can't be arsed having to cook when on holiday Smile

@kosciosco, I've stayed at Sylvana's Wohlfühl Hotel in Mayrhofen. It's a very nice B&B, but right at the back of the town (quiet though). There is a bus stop outside though, so it's still connected to the ski lift, and only 5-10min walk from bars and restaurants in normal shoes. The family is very friendly.

This is looking to be around €900 B&B for 22-25 Jan for a room of 2 people.

www.zillertal.at for accommodation options is the best bet.

@swskier, I guess it's early booking atm though. We didn't pay anywhere near that – Easter weekend, but multiple large events going on in town.

@kosciosco, it depends on what flights you can get to Innsbruck as well as accommodation. It may be better to choose a more mainstream airport such as Munich and put up with a longer transfer but fits into your tight schedule better. Half the time I’ve flown to Innsbruck I’ve changed planes in Frankfurt.

from Innsbruck as i said, for a weekend, i think Stubaital is the best option. Otherweise Zillertal
There is more than enought accommodation and its possible to find something only for 3-4 days.
Otherwise, maybe from Munich or Salzburg and heading somewhere to ski amade (e.g. Flachau) where there is also enough option.

Solden, Ischgl or St. Anton will be really expensive vs the others above.

@kosciosco,

@johnE, makes a good point - flights to Innsbruck are very limited as it is mainly used by charter companies and only BA have any sort of scheduled mid-week service from the UK. You might find that while you can get to Innsbruck on a Saturday fairly easily, getting back mid-week might be more difficult and/or more expensive.

As you asked for an alternative airport, the most obvious one is Salzburg, which is served by daily flights from BA and Ryanair. There are numerous resorts within 90 minutes of Salzburg Airport, including all of the Ski Amade resorts and the Saalbach-Hinterglemm Ski Circus.

You'll also have many more options if you consider a B&B/Pension rather than trying to find self-catering for 12 people, but look at Sunweb for self-catering possibilities as they seem to have some larger (e.g. 3-bedroom) apartments in the modern blocks that have been built in places like Zell am See, Leogang and Saalbach.

Another option could be to fly to Zurich, and go to Engelberg. There's a reasonable amount of self-catering accommodation in Engelberg, and in general I find it easier to get accommodation for non-standard dates in Switzerland than in other alpine countries. A quick check on booking.com shows a few options at not daft prices for 12 people from Sat Jan 22nd to Tue Jan 25th.

The Apres ski in Engelberg is also livelier than most in Switzerland, at least on weekends; Monday may be a bit quieter

Easyjet fly to Innsbruck on a regular basis from various uk airports, ie from Gatwick they are showing a flight each day in January

In high season, around 60-70% of the flights from Innsbruck are to/from the UK. Most of the remainder are for the Netherlands, with a couple for Germany and Vienna. Whether they're any use to you depends on when and where you're coming from, but the airport is served by Easyjet, Ryanair, Jet2 and BA, as well as Lufthansa and Transavia/KLM if you don't mind a change.

@nahdendee, Happy to be corrected re. the Easyjet flights from Gatwick - I swear that they weren't showing when I checked last week! Anyhoo, at the prices that are currently being shown, flying to Innsbruck for a few days skiing looks a great deal.

As well as the resorts already mentioned in the thread, travelling East brings the resorts in the direction of Kitzbühel into play. A fast train from Innsbruck takes just over an hour to reach Kitzbühel. The local train that stops along the way means that smaller resorts such as Hopfgarten, Brixen im Thale, Westendorf and Kirchberg in Tirol are all just over an hour from Innsbruck.

@quinton, Easyjet Gatwick-Innsbruck is a flight that runs year round, 3 times a week in the interseason and about 5 times a week during the summer and winter.

Bristol to Innsbruck runs in the Winter with about 3 or so flights per week. Other routes too, I just don't know them.

As long as the weather is ok then there aren't many better airports than Innsbruck for a ski holiday. It's well known that bad weather can shut the place down, but it's not that often across an entire season.

Consider staying in Neustift in Stubai Tal and have access to Schlick 2000 and the Stubai Glacier on the same lift pass with 2 small local ski hills. The bonus here is that it's only 25 minutes from the airport by taxi and all the area's in the valley are serviced by regular modern ski buses. It's a bit off most people's radar but well worth a visit and I've skied all the regular rated big name resorts, it's perfect for a short trip when time is in short supply.
