Looking at a possible week here next season. Has anyone based themselves here for a week before? And if so am I correct in thinking Sesto would be the best location?
Closest I’ve been is Kronplatz, but that was the year when everything just opened up after lockdown and the thought of 40mins on a train in a mask with all the restrictions was just enough to deter us.

been there twice but in summer. Nice place. I think for Winter Sexten is the best place to be.
When are you thinking to visit? i mean which week?
I am trying to figure how full/empty is vs the other areas

@turms2, not sure yet. But will either be end of January/start of February or last half of March.

Isn’t dri zinnen the traditional name for the 3 beautiful peaks sometimes called très chima above missurina.
As@turms2, says they are staggering in the summer but due to very heavy traffic almost impossible to get to. A couple years ago it took us over 2 hours to get to missurina from cortina. Then we were turned away as there was nowhere to park.
I didn’t even know there was any skiing there.

@johnE, never been for skiing, but from what i see, it has to be really nice.
i think you are right. But skiing is not up there. Is from the other side
I suppose you mention the observation point near the lake. The slopes and resort are from the other side of the tre cime, looking the East Tirol.
There are some thoughts for connecting Sillian in East Tirol with the Drei Zinnen skiresort.

@dode, We are looking at Drei Zinnen as well (the hotel with the same name btw). Do note that this hotel normally closes around 15 march for the winter season. Suggesting that maybe conditions are not so good anymore later in March....?

Stayed in Sesto / Sexten at the ski-in ski-out Berg Hotel. It's like a more compact Sella Ronda area with less people and the usual immaculately groomed pistes, snow making, modern lifts, v friendly and helpful locals, typical Italian-style food and hospitality with Austrian efficiency etc. Taxi transfer from Venice was about 2.5 hours and I think around 250 Euro each way which was OK for a group of 4. Not a lot in the way of apres ski. They are linking up with Sillian in Austria soon so the area will be even bigger. If you are into tennis, you might bump into Jannick Sinner as he's from Sesto and goes back there for down time. We didn't see him.
Despite being called 3 Zinnen you don't really get to see the 3 peaks from the ski area. It is fabulous secenery tho.
I would go back for sure.

The proposed link with Sillian has been on the piste maps for ages. Is it really ever going to happen? It's quite a long way as the crow flies.

I'm also thinking about Drei Zinnen for early March next year.
I'd be interested to hear anyone's experience of conditions at that time.
It looks like a third of the slopes face NW, a third E- NE, and a third SW. I assume that the SW slopes suffer a bit at that time of year.

@Langerzug, re: hotel end of season times. Noted thx. We looked at that hotel and the Berg, but are leaning towards the Bad Moos. The inside/outside pool, along with it being right at the foot of the slope with a lift right outside is swinging it. Only downside is all the childcare/kids club facilities, but if we time it right we might luck out with mostly adults.
@Phantom Phil, it sounds right up our street. Not bothered about apres and the quieter the pistes are, the better!

@dode, We have stayed in the Drei Zinnen in summer some years ago, not yet in winter. It's a very special, historic hotel (registered landmark). Most of all: diner was very very impressive. And they too have virtually direct lift acces via the little tow lift in front of the hotel.

Meet a guy last Jan who raved about 3 zinnen . The slopes are a lot quieter than Sella’s areas , restaurants are cheaper and he said hotel Eggele was the best place he ever stayed. They have a minibus to the train station so very easy to ski either drei zinnen or kronplats.
I am considering going there next year, really fancy a change…

@Harrow lady, I have no idea about restaurants. I visited the area in summer, after the Covid period, but I honestly can’t remember the restaurant prices. But definitely was not something to remember so i suppose they were moderate or relativ cheap.
However, when I was looking for accommodation for the week of 6–13 February, I noticed that prices were generally a level lower compared to Fassa and especially Val Gardena.
Over the past month, I did quite extensive research—sending hundreds of emails—for the weeks 2–9 January and 6–13 February across Val Gardena, Arabba, Carezza, Val di Fassa, Kronplatz and 3 Zinnen.
From what I’ve seen, the general pattern is:
Val Gardena and Arabba (most expensive) → Val di Fassa → Kronplatz → 3 Zinnen & Carezza (roughly similar and cheaper).
Also, even within Val di Fassa there are noticeable differences—Canazei is clearly more expensive than Vigo or Pozza di Fassa.
Strangely, the prices I booked in Vigo di Fassa and Sexten are actually lower than what I paid last year in Avoriaz / Les Gets.
In Vigo di Fassa, the apartment is practically sk-in/ski-out, while in 3 Zinnen it’s about 300 m from the lift.
It’s probably because Vigo isn’t directly connected to the Sella Ronda, but even so, it feels really cheap for that period.
