 Poster: A snowHead
|
After travelling back and forth to the alps on Eurostar about 8 times with my backpack, my 2 gas cylinders from my Alpride 2 airbag was confiscated at Lille returning home last week. I protested but to no avail, just plain nastiness from their staff, no real explanation.
After getting home I then emailed their customer service department asking if I could take my avalanche backpack.
After a few days I received this reply.
Dear ?
Gas canisters, including those used in avalanche airbag backpacks, are not permitted on Eurostar trains. This applies to all types of pressurised cylinders, whether they are full or empty.
For safety reasons, Eurostar prohibits any inflammable or pressurised substances in passenger luggage, and this includes gas canisters of all kinds.
If your avalanche airbag system uses a removable gas cylinder, please ensure the canister is removed before travelling and make alternative arrangements, such as a specialist courier service, to transport it. The backpack itself may still be carried once the canister has been removed.
Best wishes
Emma

This is why I switched to electric.
I had one of the older Alpride packs for a while and even with packing the cylinders in the checked baggage with the IATA regulations wrapped around them (and the relevant section highlighted), pre-informing the airline and getting approval I still had several occasions where airport security removed them from the baggage and left me a letter.
The relevant airport or other security screeners are largely a law unto themselves and, unless you're there to argue the case, will just remove stuff.
So, now, I always use my electric avi bag as my carry on and, whilst I've been questioned about it a few times, I've never not been allowed to fly with it. Not taken it on Eurostar yet though ...

Champagne is pressurised. Brandy is flammable.

You'll need to Register first of course.

It's the usual jobs worth thing of immediately banning anything that you're not familiar with, good to have the heads up.
@Blackblade, I've heard tales of people having issues even with the electric one, I guess because people assume it's LiOn batteries? I've taken to exactly the same care I took with the canister bag i.e a printed copy of the airline approval, the IATA regs and the Alpride gumpf saying what it is and why it's okay. I do put it in the hold though
