Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

18 Year old Ski Thief (Austria)

Serial 18-year-old caught again with stolen skis in Tyro

An 18-year-old German has been arrested again in Tyrol with stolen skis. The young man was caught on Wednesday at the valley station in Scheffau (SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental). A few weeks ago, he had also been stopped by bystanders after a major ski theft in the Zillertal.

Previously arrested in Hochzillertal

At the beginning of March, the suspect tried to flee from the Hochzillertal - Hochfügen ski area with a car full of stolen skis, together with a peer. According to the police, there were a total of eight pairs of skis worth 10,000 euros in the car. The flight failed because several bystanders stopped the car by standing in front of it. Read our earlier article about this.

Dozens of skis offered for sale

During further investigation, police discovered that the 18-year-old had repeatedly put expensive skis up for sale on an online sales platform between early February and mid-March. According to the police, some of these could be directly linked to thefts in the Zillertal and Kitzbühel regions.

Possibly involved in many more thefts

The young man is suspected of being responsible not only for the previously known eight stolen pairs of skis, but for another thirty other ski thefts. According to the police, he would have sold 18 pairs of skis and earned several tens of thousands of euros. The other twelve pairs would still be in his possession.

The defendant has confessed

During his interrogation, the 18-year-old confessed, according to the police, as he did at the beginning of March. He has been released pending trial.

Replacement price easily gets there. Yeah, I wouldn't pay the full prices myself, but a quick check of latest versions of my 3 current skis reveals RRP of well over €1000 for each of them. (Yeah, the Stoecklis (now called the Laser GS) are the most expensive, at something like chf1600 including binding).

@Steilhang, The skis I have been using for the past few seasons - Stöckli Montero AX, are €1200 for a pair (without bindings!), though you can get a discount off that if you look around. Most other Stöcklis are that or more. A discerning thief could easily rack up €10k's worth of skis in the back of a car. Like much else associated with skiing buying skis is getting to be very expensive.

Can you be a “serial 18 year old”? For many years, on her birthday, my MIL used to say she was “21 again” - is that the same thing?

@Steilhang, agree that discounts are widely available (including from 18 year olds on ebay) but https://www.sport-schuster.de/stoeckli-montero-ax-strive-13d-24-25.html so plenty pay full price

 You know it makes sense.

Some ski's might have a retail price that is over a grand, my view of those that pay that much he is irrelevant, but secondhand skis are going to be far far less, and if they are worth so much either new or secondhand perhaps the owners should be taking more care of them, as the saying goes, fools and their money

Similar here, my new skis were price listed at €1300 for this season’s model, but paid much less at my local ski shop.

He'd be welcome to my £50 10 year old Salomons, it would force me to replace them!

Joking aside its good to be reminded that things like this go on, I never lock my skis as they are practically worthless but if I owned a decent pair I'd definitely consider some form of lock.

I lock mine anytime I leave them - including in a shared boot room (unless I have a private locker). I've done this ever since my old skis were nicked in 1991. It's not just the cost of replacement that's an issue, it's the sheer ball ache of having to get off the mountain without skis, file a police report, insurance claim then find a replacement. Over the years we've seen everything from people taking the wrong skis / boots out of the boot room to spotting thieves taking one of our split skis and looking for the matching other.

I also take my poles into any bar/restaurant as they are an easy £100+ bunce for a thief or just an idiot who has broken theirs.

at Glenshee in February I put my skis and poles down for 5 mins when handing back the kids' hire stuff, came back out and some guy was walking away with the poles. collared him and said er those are my poles and he made some excuse about thinking that the rack was where you got the hire stuff, which was an obvious lie. I was with my kids and was so surprised I just let it slide after that. The guy was wearing jeans and we were leaving at 1400 as it was so rainy, so he will have got his comeuppance poles or no poles

I had someone 'swap' my Carbon 14 Leki poles for same size but Alu versions ... so, not just idiots but also thieves ...

My partner had someone take her rental skis instead of theirs despite being a completely different colour and the bindings set too large. Fortunately we found the miscreant as she was a beginner who, unsurprisingly, kept falling out of her skis so we found her on the slopes.

As a result I know always bring a lock with me and lock up my skis and poles !
