Serious burns are horrific - I know two people who had VERY serious burns when they were young - the pain and suffering was terrible and the injuries affected them throughout their lives. So I was astonished by the latest news story on the Crans Montana fire - I know that epople forget...they can express emotional outrage at something and then move on; I know that people can shift position, from thinking about victims' experiences to thinking more about themselves - and therefore moving from sympathy to antipathy or lack of empathy. But this is surprising:

I have cared for a seriously ill person at one period of my life, and the financial impact can be large. If a parent has to stop working to be a carer, if special therapy is needed, 50,000chf would be far less than the expenditure and impact.
If the victims themselves have their employment opportunities limited, then the impact will be far more than 50,000chf.
50,000 for victims, many of whom have life-changing injuries is minor compared to state expenditure on a vast number of things - witness failed defence procurement in the UK - or top salaries globally.
Obviously there are issues of detail - the severity of injuries varies amongst victims, and the life impacts will too. So a blanket 50,000 might seem lacking in sensitivity to those variations. But the chances of severe life impact seems very present.
For reference, some of the outcomes of serious burns victims are listed here, and the research shows victims can have adverse life trajectories or with support, better outcomes. But the latter is not guaranteed.

Remember the scenes of mobbing around the court in Sion? the public outrage at the local officials, the global news stories?
The world now seems not only to have moved on but sentiment has turned 180 degrees - modern mass psychology....
I recognise that it's one third who feel it's too generous - not a majority...
Although it was the figure amongst young people that made me open my eyes a bit wide....
a couple of interesting pieces on why concern can peak and then fade, or indeed reverse:

This federal amount will be in addition to insurance and canton payouts. So, presumably / potentially a small % of the total compensation?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@gra, yes, and that will indeed vary according to severity, which is good.

@valais2, I think the issue here is that the victims are already receiving financial assistance from the canton, and can expect to get full compensation, tailored to individual circumstances, from the insurance payout. This is a third, federal, payout - going to everyone irrespective of whether their injuries were minor or major - which explains why some feel it is too generous.

I was wondering about that - presumably the venue was insured?

@Origen, @ecureuil, yes it was but there are very big discussions between state, commune, canton, insurers as to liabilities and restrictions on liabilities. All over the CH press about a month ago. Insurers convened a meeting with the State. It's made complex by the criminality and the the potential lapse by the Commune and indirectly the Canton.

Ah yes, I can see how complex that might be. I don't think I could bear to see anyone I loved suffering the way some of those kids will have suffered, and still be suffering.
