| Living in East Kent it's only 45 minutes from the tunnel for me. However the most annoying part of the whole 600 mile plus journey is when coming off the train. It's a mile and a half in completely the wrong direction before taking the first exit and going all the way back again along the A20. Such a pain! |
Surely you come off at the turn for Folkestone & Hythe, not go to on to M20 and u-turn at J11? |
Yes, that's what I meant by the first exit. Then back on A20 to J12 followed by Alkham Valley to Whitfield then towards Ramsgate.

Just over 12.5 hours door to door and the travel gods smiled on us, forking out for Flexiplus also helped.

Quite a smooth journey then.
I calculate longer trips in general @ 50mph average .... including all queue, stops for "personal " relief, tunnel time inclusive (don't count miles there) and anything else that can be lumped into that journey. Usually accurate in planning to give achievable estimate, and doesn't usually differ much at all.

Meanwhile, we’re still trundling past Reims in the rain. We’ve just been overtaken by a horse - in a horsebox.
A while back we saw a VW van SK11SCO. Anyone we know?

@Origen, lots! Probably got the cost back
@ski3, I work on 60 in France as can generally cruise at 80 safely and legally, always allow 10-hours for resort to Calais which is generally pretty accurate. Today was closer to 9 as had no traffic and made 2 short stops

Glad you made it onto the Eurostar. I'd have been wandering through Nord as you were up in Departures as we're in a hotel just up the street tonight. Safe journey the rest of the way home.

Absolutely freezing in Paris. How is it I'm colder here than I have been whilst skiing all week?

@Owlette, yep - we seem to have driven from Spring in the Alps back to winter - may light the log burner

@Owlette, Thanks, you too! It’s sunny in London but definitely colder than the Alps. Queue for passport control was a bit of a nightmare, our Eurostar was delayed by about ten mins because of it but made up time. Waiting for the last train home now. First class lounge at Kings Cross is fancy

La plagne to near Arras in good time today, no traffic around and past lyon. Did see V long ques at some fuel stations on the way including the station we randomly stopped at, we could have driven further but we're committed to the que before I realised how bad it was.
The gradual drop in temperature from the sunny mountains to the overcast north and light rain around Reims was actually welcome.

@johnE, there is an expectation that kitchen and rubbish are dealt with, but anyone renting out will have a cleaning team going in to deal with the rest. I probably do more than needed as it is my aparment, although I often get a comment about our hairy dogs. I always have glass cleaner, toilet cleaner and cleaning spray for kitchen in our cupboards, but no bleach. It is not needed, it smells vile, and brings me out in a rash. I do find that French guests are much more used to what is expected and leave the place spotless. I once arrived at our apartment on a Saturday evening when my apartment manager had been called back to the UK for a family emergency. I was fully expecting to have to clean up and wash and change bedding. Instead the place was gleaming and the laundry done and hung up. I even messaged manager as i thought she must have managed to clean after all, but no, it had been the guests.

@Hells Bells, I always chuck some domestos (other bleach bands are available) in the toilet before leaving.

@johnE, it's very harmful to the environment. I am on a mission to have it banned. We do not need bleach in our lives.

Owlette, similarly having not felt cold at all in balmy Paradiski last week, the first time I felt cold on the entire trip was early this morning walking to passport control at Calais, pre-ferry embarkation. Brrrrr.

I got rid of a new cleaner when they used bleach in my upstairs bathroom and took the colour out of my new towels in the process. They had been specifically asked not to use bleach. It was a deep clean too. They didn't get paid.

Easily through Paris security and just left Gare du Nord dead on time. And so ends another fabulous Easter trip.
I spent this morning searching various resorts for both Christmas and Easter and now have decision fatigue. Perhaps it's best left until after the summer.

@MotownJunk, Thanks for the First Class lounge tip. It's never occurred to me to check. Currently sat in Queen Victoria's private waiting area at Paddington, which is situated in the First Class lounge.
Lad2 has already raided the snack bar.

@Specialman, That's already booked! We're off to Brazil for two weeks on a backpacking adventure (Sao Paulo/Iguazu Falls/Rio/Ilha Grande/Sao Paulo).
I feel the urge for a change at Easter. Inspired by Val Thorens based on the VT hoodies people were wearing when they boarded at Moutiers yesterday, but leaning more towards Les Men to stay in.
Christmas, I keep flip-flopping between Corvara and going back to Soldeu.

Just driven up to Laon. The Total service stations were quite busy on account of the cheap prices, a few places didn’t have posh diesel or petrol but plenty of the normal.
What struck me were the long queues for EV charging with warnings on the overhead gantries. Never seen that before. Given it was a quietish Sunday not sure what it’s going to be like on the mad summer Saturdays.

@Owlette I’ve not been in the one at Paddington, they’re worth it at Kings Cross just to able to jump the queue for the toilets. The snacks are a bonus though.
That’s quick off the mark @BornAgainSkier, I get terrible post holiday blues and immediately start planning the next. Sounds like a similar situation here @Specialman, Mr M said something about summer first

Home sweet home. Happily the GWR back to the West had 10 carriages this time instead of the ridiculous 5 they put on on the way out. So plenty of seats for us.

We got down here 2 days ago and saw prices from 225 to 295 for basic diesel on the autoroute. Then went to the carrefour in Cluses and disappointingly paid 250.
