Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

This is my first time driving down. We’re currently in the queue for the Portsmouth Caen ferry. We’ll be driving to Alpe d’Huez tomorrow for three days skiing, before heading back Monday for work on Tuesday. Just a sneaky way to get some extra skiing in

One sleep to go!! Or as I just said to my SIL half a sleep for them as they're leaving home at 0430 tomorrow.

Final day off at home for me today and I have no plans. Cases are packed. Just toiletries and electronics to chuck in the rucksacks tomorrow morning.

Safe travels, @Pen Eira.

Smooth drive down to Dover for the DFDS ferry. At French border discovered I had picked up my wife's expired passport. Luckily she is Dutch so as an EU passport holder she was allowed through anyway. Bollocking for me.

Luckily our son is flying out tonight so he's bringing her new passport but he can't find his Dutch one so will have to use British and brave the queue at GVA.

What else can go wrong?!

Now on board at Dover waiting to leave. Then potter down to Geneva and pick him up from the airport. ETA Chatel 0100 Friday. Home on Monday.

@holidayloverxx, they were well separated. Turned out the new one was in our flat in London. Luckily our son is working from there before flying out.

Lesson learnt though.

What an extraordinarily trusting wife you have. No way, in almost 50 years of marriage would I have assumed my OH would remember. Why do people keep expired passports?

@Origen, Why not? I've got all of ours - kept elsewhere however. No particular point of course, although nowadays it is fun to look at stamps in them

@Origen, not least because one of the old ones contains "indefinite right to remain" which is more beneficial than "Settled status"

+1
i still have one from the mid 90's when i travelled across the middle east and on a trans Africa organised (economic) expedition, on a converted lorry, had loads of stamps from criss-crossing borders, especially at vic falls where you frequently cross from Zimbabwe to Zambia and gain several stamps.

Are the queues for the Eurotunnel likely to be very long tomorrow (we are booked on the 06:24) ?

When we were on the same train a month ago it was almost deserted at that time but that was just a random Friday not a public (and school ) holiday. It's a long time since I took the tunnel on Good Friday so I've forgotten what a busy day looks like.

Anyone else driving to Austria tomorrow or is everyone heading to France ? It always seems like 90% of the cars on the A26 keep on heading down to the French Alps when you get to Reims and very few cars are taking the A4 to cross over into Germany.

Driving down through the U.K. leg of our journey today, I came across multiple no fuel signs and prices of £1.81.9 ppl for E10 unleaded.
If I make it to the Alps I’ll be happy, getting home may be interesting

no issues around my way the last couple of days, filled up yesterday at a deserted fuel station, at £149.9 PL E10, no change in prices or queues today.

i wonder how much the media is salivating at the thought of massive disruption to fuel, every time i see a picture or comment online about queues, it is always an image of a Costco somewhere, but seeing as they are generally 10pPL cheaper than anywhere else at anytime, there are always queues at any Costco fuel station when i go to one.

Booked last minute today, travelling tomorrow to Tignes via the tunnel.

Overnight stay just South of Dijon to make an easy journey up the hill the next day.

Be careful!!

At two service stations on the drive through France today there was no diesel.
Petrol was OK but wow...expensive compared to the UK!

And don't think you'll easily find it off the motorway...driving over the Jura (Bescanson, Pontarlier, Vallorbe) we passed multiple garages with no fuel at all.
Their signs display a "price" of 99.99 in that case

Those.that had any had petrol.

So don't run your fuel right down before filling up!

Thanks for the thoughts. We’re in Oz en Oisans now, after 870 kms and about 11 hours of driving. That’s a couple of stops for breakfast, lunch and changing drivers plus a nasty hold up near Auxerre where we missed google telling us to turn off. There was a brief panic that we hadn’t registered for the free flow autoroute from Caen to Paris. But that’s paid now. All in all I think it went pretty well.

We were grateful for the Total Energie tip - cheaper petrol was painlessly obtained. Let’s hope for the same on the way back.

As the food we had today was disappointing does anyone have tips for ok service station food? We’d prefer to avoid McDonalds etc, but would like something more interesting than a sandwich.

@Pen Eira, there are usually some with a table service restaurant with local specialities, but we now tend to head of the autoroute. Nuits-St-Georges is close to an exit, just 5 minutes gets us to a nice village with nice food.
