This might be of interest to those that speak French etc
One of the team that manages the cross-country sector here posts twice a day on FaceBook which pistes have been groomed and advises as to how the conditions will be, given that now as the sun is getting stronger timing is important depending on what type of cross-country you are doing.
So Classic which is when you use the grooves/rails at the side, is not so dependent on temps, whereas skating on the wide groomed piste is best when it is still hard and frozen, as when it melts, it's far harder to glide along.
He is quite elaborate and amusing with his descriptions, and when run through Google Translate, it's even more bizarre and amusing.
The French do have a multitude of words for describing the various snow-pack and piste conditions he often elaborates about the conditions you might expect on any given day
This morning's

I was expecting a more bizarre translation of some weird French saying.
... pist conditions are perfect, like sliding your skis through a badgers wet back bottom fur..."

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@adithorp, dammit - that's what I came here for too!

Which word ( s) do you think refer to snow pack apart from them saying the tracks are groomed I can see no other reference to the snow conditions

Yes, that's what I thought too. And very little to skiing, except the "pas tournant".

Sorry@Origen, there are a few others hidden in there such as une glisse élaborées
And it's the overall enthusiasm of his prose (see below) xhich makes it so interesting to read (try and get your head around), though agreed not to much re the snowpack, that was more in the other thread, sorry.
I'll post some others as better examples.

@Weathercam, were the quotes in your first post the Engish translations earlier? If not I'm loosing the plot (nothing new there).

And we're off again!!! A beautiful morning, a beautiful day, groomed slopes, sunny smiles, shared pleasures, committed sport, sophisticated skiing, twisting turns, zigzagging corners, perfectly aligned routes, tangled hair, and sometimes even a runny nose, the ultimate symbol of the fresh air! Have a great day!

DERNIER DAMAGE : Le 16/03/2026 soir
Bonne glissez
Basically cracking conditions for the morning - that said, also cracking conditions for touring & Spring snow

I'm surprised that "fart" hasn't cropped up in this conversation

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Coincidence in you mentioning that, just as I was packing up my uber fit Swedish mate was about to start, and he was going Classic as it was around 10:15 and he showed me the wax he had put on and it was so sticky, I couldn't quite get my head around the beneficial properties of that wax as it was just so sticky, though a good fart is much more important for Classic than skating
|
|
|
|

Presumably the sticky wax was just applied to the "kick" zone in the middle of the ski, to provide forward momentum? The part that's off the snow in the glide stage (which is why shuffling around isn't really "skiing").

 You know it makes sense.
