Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Campervan trip to the Dolomites -where to got for nice blues and nice snow? Any ideas

 Poster: A snowHead

Hello Snowheads

Just about to set off for a month driving down through Austria to the Dolomites. Probably ski the first two weeks then hiking/towns/touristy things to avoid skiing over the Easter holidays.

We did a similar trip last year mainly in Austria and I loved Solden and the Stubai Glacier. I like (and can do) nice wide blues. I’m not great with heights on steep drop off sand dislike cat tracks like in Obergurgl. Mr camper can ski anything really but will ski mostly with me. He dislikes slush so it is a little tricky at this time of year.

I’ll start again at Stubai Glacier, then Kronplatz looks a good bet, Brunico looks a lovely town. Defo have to go to Cortina as Mr camper would like to do the Olympic run and there looks to be some nice blues to one side. If too slushy, I’ll try the blues at the very top, though I suspect the height might put me off. I have been on the cable car there before!

Then I get stuck, the Dolomites is hard to work out. I’m not good enough yet for the lovely circuits. Arabba is high but looks very “red” for me. Any ideas where else to ski? Or indeed anything else in the area which we shouldn’t miss.

Any helpful very gratefully received- thanks in advance

Stay here and you're almost ski in ski out from the blue heaven of Colfosco, Corvara and San Cassiano.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Good shout if you want blues, but have access to steeper stuff for Mr C

As to slush, you might be lucky and avoid it, you can get fresh snow in the Dolomites in March, but if you get Spring conditions, try and follow the sun round.

The Winter Paralympics finishes this weekend, so Cortina should be fully available when you get there.

The blues up at Ra Valles on the Tofana keep its snow, if you don't mind the cable car up and down.

You can wait at the sunny terrace of the Duca d'Aosta restaurant while he does the Olympic run, then take blue 38 down together.

The area around Cinque Torri/Col Gallina/Lagazuoi is very scenic and tends to keep snow well into the late season.

Carezza is a nice ski area with a circuit of blues and some steeper runs higher for Mr C. Nearby Lago di Carezza is pretty too.

Other places of scenic interest in the area might be Lago di Braies & Val di Funes...google them.

Bolzano, Brixen & Ortisei have pretty town centres.

Hope that helps!! Come back and let us know how you got on! snowHead

Brunico is quite a pretty town centre, though not as much so as some other towns in the area.

If you are in that area after 13th April and looking for touristy things, this open air museum is well worth a visit

Currently closed for winter, re-opens on 14th April. My wife & I visited a few years back on a summer holiday to the Dolomites.

Thanks this is super helpful - I really would like to try the blues at Ra Valles, be like skiing on top of the world. I will report back, I've found Snowheads invaluable in trying to figure out the best places. Blue run skiers are skiers too so might be helpful to others Smile

If I didn't like slush then I would plan to be out as early as possible and try to stay high or north facing. I suspect that at Easter the Dolomites tend towards the softer end of things by about lunchtime.
