No, I’m not going to the Middle East. There’s no snow there. I’m going from New York to Milan.
There’s an Emirate flight that “normally” goes New York -> Milan -> Dubai (and return). Obviously all of last week’s flights, the Milan <-> Dubai leg had be cancelled. But flight history shows the Milan <-> JFK leg had been operating as usual. They’re a fair bit cheaper than other airlines.
My concern is, that particular route was probably intended for ferrying people from New York/Milan to Dubai. But that is not happening right now. Will they continue to operate the JFK - Milan leg indefinitely if the Dubai airspace continue to be closed?
I’ve been in a similar situation once before, and it was not fun. But back then, I bought the ticket before the “event” happened.
Back in 2019, right at the beginning of Covid, I boarded a flight on Cathay Pacific, from JFK to Vancouver. I expected to be back a week later. The route was basically the tail end of the Hong Kong to Vancouver flight, continuing on to New York.
Then Covid hit China. Travel between Hong Kong and Vancouver dried up within days.
Long story short, I flew out to Vancouver on a half full plane. The days I was at Vancouver, I was bombarded with worsening news of the crisis daily. 3 days before I was to fly home, Cathay send me an email that they would evaluate the flight from Hong Kong to Vancouver/New York on a daily basis. Meaning, they may cancel operation on any day! Needless to say, that sent my stress level through the roof!
In the end, I got my very stressed out sorry butt back to New York 5 days before they completely cease operation on that route. The flight from Vancouver to New York had but 20 passengers on it! It was eery quiet, spooky.
The Emirate flight is considerably less expensive than other airlines. But am I setting myself up for a major worry again? Or even potential big hassle and expense if they do stop flying that route? Is it worth the stress? I can’t decide.
Would you do it if you were in my shoes?

@abc, Emirates seem to be ramping up their schedule. They are now back flying to UK regional airports like Newcastle (Initially it was Heathrow and Edinburgh). So it looks like they are pressing on with much risk mitigation into Dubai. As you are getting off at Milan then there is no war risk to you so I would be tempted. But you are in a better place to assess what your President may do next. In the end the aircraft are safer and cheaper to insure if they are not sat in Dubai.

If I have to guess I'd say they would keep flying the route otherwise they will lose their landing slots, which are expensive to get.

Would you book a flight on Emirate right now?
Not if they're flying to USA I wouldn't.

I would think it'd be ok. Totally different to COVID years. They'll want to keep flying profitable routes even if they are shortened.

I would hesitate and think about it like you are. Having done so, I'd book that particular itinerary as I don't see increased risk.

@Scooter in Seattle, I was coming to that conclusion. But I may not have thought of everything. Posting the question to a wider audience some of whom maybe more knowledgeable on the industry and the wider world.

Not sure they’re required to do so. They may just offer a refund (which would leave me in a larch)?

@abc, its classed a an EU flight so rebooking is one of three options they have to provide (Milan - JFK).

Well, I just bumped into another risk factor. This one is way bigger.
Had a simple question which I tried to get answered via chat. The chat was not available “due to high demand” and was suggested to call. I already half-suspect what might be next… I wasn’t even put on hold, just busy signals. Too many people already holding.
It’s understandable. They’re probably too busy sorting out all the passengers who already got ticket. Or worse, stuck half way through their journey and need to get to their destination somehow. Their customer services are swamped.
I think it would be foolhardy to book a new flight at this point and hope everything will go smoothly. Ok, it could. But if it doesn’t, I would be stuck in that long line of people needing help and not necessarily getting it.
It’s a shame. Emirate is known for its good service. But right now is not the best time to get it when they’re overwhelmed.

Well, I have to give up on Emirate. I wanted to confirm luggage allowance. But the chat is still closed. Not able to get through on the phone either.
Now that the prices between Emirate and other airlines are leveling off. It’s not worth the small saving to fly Emirate with inaccessible customer service.

Delta from JFK.
SAS from DC is a cheap alternative.
