Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I thought it was funny. That's how those pieces work. Obviously not to those of you who feel lampooned. But that's the point, isn't it?

@abc, it's the few hero runs, when all the planets align, that make the activity memorable for me. I can enjoy all the other experiences otherwise than on a ski holiday (the example of summer hikes in the Dolomites, with good friends, enjoying amazing scenery and good food, springs to mind. Absolutely superb, and the kit is less of a bother, but it's missing the highs of those hero runs.)

@KSH, but skiers are mostly optimists, aren’t they? They plan for a week of hero skiing, even though deep down they know it’s unlikely to happen for everyday of the week. But if they don’t go, there’s zero chance of even one hero run!

Once a trip had been committed (flights and lodging bought, past refund deadline), there’s no room left to do otherwise even when the snow doesn’t oblige. That’s when the “holiday mode” is switched on, for me anyway.

@abc, yeah, I guess that's where reality sets in and you do your best to enjoy whatever is on offer. What I'm saying is that I don't even expect those few hero runs, but when I get them, that'll turn the whole holiday into magic for me. But anyway, you really can't generalise with feelings like these; and they are a bit weird. Laughing

@KSH, when I go skiing in north America (US/Canada), it’s mostly for the skiing. Still, I had my fair share of disappointments with the sometimes unkind snow god. That’s when I learned to turn those ski trips into holidays with a bit of skiing. That would be the equivalence of your ski trips to the Alps.

But when I cross the pond (actually sometimes the “big pond” called Pacific), it changes the equation. It’s not worth going “just” for the skiing.

Sure, I could have gone in the summer. But even if I do summer trips, the winter trip still means one additional trip that I otherwise wouldn’t have.

I never found the lugging of ski kits an issue. I either leave it near the airport or the ski destination, depending on where I was having my non-ski “holiday”. So for me, summer or winter are irrelevant. I’m going to Europe (or Asia) for a holiday, with some skiing involved if it’s in the winter.

I’m obviously biased. snowHead Many of my summer holidays involve even more cumbersome kit! Bikes are really hard to stash in a hotel room or in the back of a small car! Embarassed Skis are piece of cake in comparison. Laughing

I can confirm that getting a bike box into the back of a too-small rental car at Venice airport has involved as much stress as trying to fit in too many skis and boards into a similar car. But it's so worth it for a trip to the Dolomites, winter or summer.

I researched long and hard before I settled on a folding bike BAG instead of a box.

Obviously, a bag doesn’t offer the same level of absolute protection of a hard side box. However, according to a few of my cycle club mates who happened to be baggage handlers (Redwood City, California is a “hub” for United Airline), bags are handled with a little less brute force than a heavy hard side box. So the safety of the content ended up being similar despite the lessor protection.

I’ll probably find out eventually with more trips…

Unfortunately, I think I might have waited too long and missed the window when my body can still cash the cheque my mind wrote. Embarassed

When I climbed up to the Madonna del Ghisallo in Lake Como this summer, instead of that weird enjoyment of suffering, I kept repeating in my head “Why am I doing this? I’m too old for this” Embarassed So I’m not sure if riding the Dolomite will happen… Sad

I wonder whether Guardian would publish an “opinion” piece about summer cycling trips to the Alps? Wink

The negatives are many. 100F (30+ Celsius) degree with the sun beating down from above. Unlike in the winter when you can just put on better warm clothing, stripping naked would make the matter worse.

“Mildly terrified”? Many found it absolutely terrifying with cars passing within inches.

Instead of lifts to take to get up the mountain, the suffering of barely able to turn the cranks on those 15% grades for 1000 metre elevation gain.

I could go on… snowHead

Good question!

Why go all that way, just to get sunstroke whilst pushing your heart rate into the red? You can do that on a beach... etc

But, I’m now convinced, having spent all these decades skiing and hanging out with other people who ski, the “slightly terrified” state is EXACTLY what makes skiing attractive for many!

For some, relatively speaking. There are loads of people who want to ski without remotely being terrified. I ski better when I'm not terrified and skiing as well as I can is the biggest motivation for me (but that's just me). Many just enjoy skiing because it's skiing, at the level they want to do it at, with an appropriate duration for lunch and a 4-star hotel/cheap self-catering.

I subscribe to the Guardian but it's too full of lazy opinion pieces and that was particularly lazy. If you want to find a hill to die on, find a smaller one or put some effort in

There are lots of people who don't push their heart rate at all, but just get the lifts up. A few years ago, I was stuck in the Alpette-Rousses Cable car in AdH next to a bunch of London-based [from the accents] snowboarders "giving it large" about how they had been up with their downhill MTBs. For reasons I don't recall, we faffed around at the top for a while then skied down Le Belvédère only to find them in a heap on a steep section, unable to get up off the snow. I hope they made it down okay and I hope they were suitably chastened but I don't hold out much hope for the latter.

Clearly that piece generated some strong comments. But… boy, did some of those confirmed the stereotype!

For many of us, skiing is cold, inconvenient and occasionally terrifying. It is a rejection of luxury and comfort, which is precisely why we are obsessed with it.

Sorry Eric, I don’t go skiing to “reject luxury and comfort”. Nope!
