Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A ski pole becoming stuck in a mogul while skiing is a common, yet hazardous, scenario often referred to as being "poleaxed," resulting in a sudden, violent, or embarrassing crash due to the abrupt stop. This occurs when the pole tip wedges vertically into the snow, forcing the skier to either lose the pole or be thrown over it.

Key Considerations and Prevention
Preventive Action: Avoid planting your pole too high above your line.
Technique: To avoid this, focus on a "quiet" upper body and active pole swings that guide you between turns.
Recovery: If your pole is stuck, it may be better to count it as a loss rather than attempting a dangerous, mid-line recovery.
Risks: A stuck pole can cause you to step on your own ski, leading to a loss of control.

Embarrassed to recount that I have punched myself in the face in low vis. Reaching for the pole plant and not realising that the ground was rising up to meet it. Felt rather sheepish (with fat lip) for an hour after.

Skier's thumb? Not using pole straps and learning to automatically let the pole go if it catches or gets stuck helps to avoid injury. If you ski somewhere with other skiers, someone will probably pick it up for you.

I am really struggling with trying to sort out what the f is going on in this thread.

Personally I like stepping on my own skis. I like the click as the bindings close first thing in the morning.

@valais2, the OP asked an LLM a question about thumb injuries and it spat out a load of nonsense. I don't think it goes any deeper than that.

This is how they lay out slalom courses, someone walks down and attaches flags to the top of all the abandoned ski poles stuck in the top of moguls.

@Scarlet, …indeed…in the medical domain AI searches are actually producing useful and evidence-based explanations. The raw material there is the sum of academic papers. In other disciplines it’s more random and fraught - such as in my own field of educational research. For others topics the LLMs go for the common material - which often is very odd indeed.

Oh when will you people learn that ski poles are unnecessary! They're just yet another bit of kit for you to fret about and become separated from hilariously.

The clue is in the thread title...unless that's been changed.

Skiers thumb is a thing, I've got issues on both hands because I'm a poo-poo skier. Haven't used the straps in a long time because of it...although do sometimes leave the pole behind in grippy snow because I'm a lazy skier too.

If the pole straps are causing a thumb injury, the strap is being used incorrectly.
