 Poster: A snowHead

We are a family of beginners - kids 12, 9 and 6. The kids and my husband are confident on the blue runs and the kids did some reds in their last lesson. I stuck to the greens! We’ve only skiied in Poland and Geilo so far and I was looking at Beitostolen for New Year. I’m worried it might be too small for the kids to ski for a week? Sure it would be perfect for me. Flights are booked so it’s definitely Norway but maybe i should change to Geilo again or Hemsedal / gausta were other options. Any advice / experience would be welcome. Thanks so much.

 Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Have a look at Trysil - more skiing than Hemsedal. Lots for everyone to do. Many of the blues and reds in Trysil are very mellow, and probably overclassified. There's a few "proper" reds for the kids to move up to, and there's plenty of greens, too. Green runs 16 and 11 are fab - pretty much always empty (mainly because they are served by a T-bar or two ).

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Beitostølen, although very pretty, is primarily a cross country resort with very limited downhill - Trysil has much more downhill. Also, I know you've booked flights but it could be very cold at New Year and daylight will be limited. Norway is expensive, especially alcohol.

As mentioned above Trysil has the most piste skiing in Norway. Personally I prefer Hemsedal - it has more of an alpine feel - but it is smaller. I've written trip reports from both ski resorts on here.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Haven't been to Beitostolen so can't help with your query on it, if you do end up there would love to hear how you get on. It does look a bit small but viewed as a winter holiday with other activities I'm sure it would work well. Perhaps give cross country skiing a go. I've been to Norway twice and intend going back to try other resorts, I've been to Geilo and Trysil so far. If you enjoyed Geilo no reason not to head back as I'm sure there are slopes there that you didn't manage to progress on to last time. If you fancy a change, Trysil would suit you all very well, lots of greens and then very manageable, wide blues for you to progress on to. The kids and husband will enjoy progressing on to the reds and will probably be able to tick off some black runs as well (avoiding piste no. 75!). They have put in a new gondola this year which will help get about the mountain easier as well. The skiing is all on one mountain, across 3 sides of it so ideal for a family with different abilities who want to meet up easily.
