Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Winter Olympics. Reflections as the come to a close...

The Ski-Mo purists have distanced themselves from the Olympic Event evidently as it bears no resemblance to actual Ski-Mo races which are far more about challenging terrain, stamina and not just ripping your skins off!

As an XC enthusiast I found the commentary was lacking in detail that I wanted to hear.

Though I think Tim & Ed toned down using amplitude this time round, well at least in the first week Laughing

@Weathercam, it was... odd, I watched the 15m highlight on BBC, but I'd seen a Skimo team event on Eurosport before and that race was again 80% decided on peoples ability to stow skis and remove and stash skins, 20% on their climb cardio, and a relaxed pootle down to the finish. What does good skimo look like, because it doesn't feel like it relies on being good at the skiing part?

All the big events here are circa 2K of climbing over 5 or so descents taking in tricky ridges etc

Curling can be more exciting when they start cheating and swearimg at each other.

JD vance being. booed is is still the highlight ofthe games.

The San Siro Should never be demolished and needs statues of Pavarotti, Roberto Baggio, Paul Gascgoine and Jurgen Klinsmann.

Corporate tickets and banning of crowds/cowbells from the side of slopes has killed the alpine atmosphere

Shove a Brit on a tray, head first down a slippery slope and we'll take on the world. We would probably win at Jeigerbombs too.

Chemmy Alcott was made for TV

Wilf O'reilly was made to speedskate

Someone had had a chat with Ed and the baggy pants brigade and asked them to stop saying 'Stoked' every minute and the result is so much better for it.

We probalbly saw the best two skiers ever to walk the planet - Vonn and Shiffrin

Not surprisingly, the Germans make the best bobsleighs

Seems Quad King, like Tiger king, went from Hero to Zero

Drone pilots are the unsung heros - Down the bobsleigh run ffs???

The Dolomites are the most beautiful mountains in the world and Cortina is simply majestic

British slalom skiers are amazing considering the grew up skiing on Toothbrushes

Lindsay Vonn being airlifted below a helicopter with Tofana as the back drop was almost as sad as seeing Goose lifted out of the sea

Big air makes amazing TV and they are now pushing the laws of physics

They should introduce the bobsleigh, being chased by a skier, being chased by a motorcyclist with guns. Winter Triathlon?

The Dollies have had a lot of snow during the last two weeks.

A wolf on the cross country skiing run in adds to the event. Maybe wolves chase the competitors around the course?

Kurgen Klopp adds value wherever he goes

Ski jumping is still the most insane sport in the world

It's probably the best place to have been in the world over the last two weeks after Glenshee.

You cannot beat a European winter olympics, it’s still magical for me. I’ve loved these.

I work, so haven’t watched it wall to wall. My highlights have been all the Alpine skiing, big track speed skating, ice hockey men and women's, plus the UK medals.

Italy receiving all the snow in the days before, following a very long snow drought, set the olympics up to look and be the part. Livigno, Cortina and the obscure parts of Südtirol holding other events have looked beautiful.

Marathon isn’t exactly TV friendly either. But it’s part of the summer Olympics. Receives a lot of TV coverage too.

On the other hand, the summer game’s “sprint” triathlon was equally underwhelming as SkiMo.

Figure skating were boring. Without the Russians, it’s basically a second tier competition. Didn’t help the “Quad God” completely blew up in his individual final (he did the job in the teams though)

Unlike some (many?), I've really enjoyed watching the curling. Being retired and at home during the day, I've generally had it on in the background while getting on with stuff. Fully accept that it's probably had rather too much coverage on main BBC channels, though, given that it could more often have been shown on red button/iplayer.

Also enjoyed alpine events (obviously), ski and snowboard cross are great entertainment, and skeleton/luge/bobsleigh.

Switched on at lunchtime today and saw biathlon (I think) was showing, but had to switch off after around 15 seconds when I realised that commentary was the abysmal Rob Walker. First I remember seeing of him was London 2012 when he covered sailing. Ben Ainslie had just won his gold, sat back to take in the moment but this prat pulled up alongside within seconds and thrust a microphone in his face. I'd have told him where to put it. Snooker fans can't stand him.

All in all it's been a great success. Seeing the amount of snow falling has also been a joy.

So glad I have TNT Sport. At least they have the 'usual' collection of commentators and pundits. Biathlon without hearing Patrick Winterton and Mike Dixon feels odd - nearly as odd as some of Rob Walker's butchering of the XC and Biathlon competitors names! (not professing I could do it muchy better, fwiw).

Highlights have been the skeleton and team boardercross golds, and have loved the positive results for Andy Musgrave, James Clugnet and Joe Davies in the XC. With the lack of funding that Nordic gets, they are producing excellent finishes.
Love the biathlon too - as you can never be sure who is going to win until maybe the last shoot. Had to admire Jaquelin and his rapid shooting - even if his first stand yesterday in breezy conditions went 'slightly wrong' rolling eyes , and the final 3 men in the Mass Start lining up for a 100m sprint for the fans Very Happy

Got the mens 50km on now at work (on mute, lol), proper brutal!

Looking forwards to France 2030 already

I love Tim and Ed, Tim was my kids absolute favourite CBBC presenter and he is always so engaging. Chemmy so brilliant and so glamorous- like someone up thread said - made for TV (and instagram). I’ve loved it all - was even a bit sorry to be in Andorra for 5 days in the middle of it. The biathlon is one of my favourites - got some more of that coming up today and my daughter can’t wait for Eileen v Zoe tonight. It’s been brilliant, not least because of the fabulous backdrops in Italy.

I was introduced to this poem back in 2003. It was lovely to hear it at the opening ceremony.

Giacomo Leopardi, the Sicilian
XII

L'INFINITO:

Sempre caro mi fu quest'ermo colle,
e questa siepe, che da tanta parte
dell'ultimo orizzonte il guardo esclude.
Ma sedendo e mirando, interminati
spazi di là da quella, e sovrumani
silenzi, e profondissima quiete

***

I always loved this solitary hill,
This hedge as well, which takes so large a share
Of the far-flung horizon from my view;
But seated here, in contemplation lost,
My thought discovers vaster space beyond
Supernal silence and unfathomed peace;
Almost I am afraid; then, since I hear
The murmur of the wind among the leaves,
I match that infinite calm unto this sound
And with my mind embrace eternity,
The vivid, speaking present and dead past;
In such immensity my spirit drowns,
And sweet to me is shipwreck in this sea.

That ski mountaineering is a bizarre event. A short ascent around some plastic obstacles that look like a wonky contra flow , time taken putting on and off skins (a ski race or a faff show?) and tucking them in a pouch (one commentator said if they aren’t completely tucked away and can be seen you get penalised?) Who’s ever seen stairs on a mountain that you have to race up, excepting those slippy ones on the way to every alpine loo, maybe thats why a few of them fell there. Then a short ski down. All seems a bit silly.

The ones I have seen have been lovely dogs but they can be a handful, including being renowned escape artists, which this one sort of proved as it slipped it's leash.

@ster, Graham Bell explained that the stairs are sort of half intended to be a nod to the point of an ascent where you have to boot pack up a steep pitch. He also made fairly clear that this was very much a taster event and not the real deal.

I think it looks a little weird and it's clearly not ski mountaineering, but if you step back and just consider it in terms of being an event I think it's good. You could really see how much athletes were going into the red zone

Ooh I can answer this! The BBC are only allowed to show 2 active live channels. They will always favour British interest in what they select, and medals in priority. Thats why we didn't get the snowboard slopestyle qualifiers. They can pick up anything once its not live for replay.
