Check the size of your school bag, but one of the specialist "underseat bags" may be a better buy. My wife is flying to geneva in a couple weeks. So I flew back on an easyJet flight yesterday, with my aerolite bag which is advertised as being bang on the 45x36x20 size - which I’ve verified (nervously) in the luggage sizer at the airport the very first time I used it.
So I was surprised to find it *wouldnt* fit under my aisle seat - it was too long. I ended up having to put it overhead when the cabin crew weren’t looking.
Hopefully the rest of the plane is up to tolerance, |
No need to do it "when the cabin crew aren't looking". They will only care if somebody who has paid for the larger bag can't fit it in the overhead lockers because others have filled them.
The fact they say it must be able to fit under the seat doesn't actually mean it has to go there.

I think its Ryanair that take a hard stance on you putting a bag in the overhead lockers if you haven’t paid for the privilege.

In my experience, they tend to get a bit shirty if the flight is fully booked, as it was coming back from INN on Sunday (not to mention others who find they can’t find a spot for their bags) - plus I had a larger sized bag up there too …
Still I’m surprised their sizing doesn’t match the actual space under the seat available - I would assume someone would have checked the fleet, seems they missed a trick for squeezing us for a smaller bag

It’s bag wars isn’t it? Differentiation between airlines competing in a similar market. Also akin to car parks with either vague or ambiguous rules.
Signage deliberately positioned in places the customer is least likely to see. Mind boggling small print. All designed to catch out the unwary or incapable and sting them with a disproportionate extra charge.
I think it’s all pathetic to be honest.

Similar thing happened to me coming back from Geilo via Bergen on Widerøe. My ski bag was 2kg overweight but my main rucksack was 5kg underweight. I offered to repack as I was 45 mins early. The check in clerk said "Nah, it's fine!" Stuck labels on my bags and sent me over to oversized luggage drop off. Not everything is enshittified in this World.

We’ve just boarded at Gatwick on our way to Barcelona. Full on examinations at the gate with all rucksacks that were anywhere near the limit being put in the bag checker. We had our helmets in hammocks and had to rearrange things to make it all fit in the rectangles. No actual difference in where the luggage ends up, but any excuse to try and make an extra buck, I guess. Though when we then got on the plane, the overhead cabins were practically full with lots of clearly free rucksacks in there. Cabin crew appeared disinclined to follow the rules and make passengers put rucksacks by their feet. Pity they didn’t have the gate staff on the plane!

Something had to be done. If airlines hadn't clamped down on luggage size and weight, we'd really have something to complain about. Back before they charged for skis (mid 90s ish), nearly everyone had their own skis and it was utter carnage. Most people I see at airports are still travelling with too much stuff and most arrive back home with many 'just in case' items they didn't wear. Case in point is the OP - 43 kilos! If that's just for one person it's a joke. I reckon I could emigrate with less than that.

I did wonder what the heck OP was carrying. I just did 2 sets of skis and bindings dings, boots and kit in a Dakine bag at 27kg. Would have been at the 23kg limit had I not been a princess and taken just one pair of skis, and worn my ski jacket rather than packed it.

I can easily have close to 50kg. Its not that difficult. Board, bindings, boots, 3-4 pairs of socks, 2x base layer, 2x midlayers & outershell. Gloves, hats, small took kit, plug in gloves dryer, etc. Then normal case with clothes, toiletries, etc. My carry on usually has electrical devices & chargers.

Is it definitely OK to have your helmet strapped to your backpack (hand luggage)? I always pack them in the hold bag but it would free up a lot of space if I knew for a fact I won't be stopped. We normally fly Ryanair, Easyjet or Jet2
Also - if you pay for skis can you take a boot bag within the 20kgs sports equipment limit - the EJ t&cs in this thread seem to imply you can. I'm thinking of buying skis but husband says with the cost of the extra luggage and the maintenance its not worth it.

Hit and miss, depending on who’s manning the gates. We’ve been through without issues, but today we got stopped. Our rucksacks weren’t particularly big, but with the helmets strapped on they are too “deep” for the size checker, even though volume wise they were a fraction of the size, and they still fit under the seat. We ended up moving clothes from a large cabin bag into our rucksacks and put the helmets in that, instead. All a bit pointless, but hey ho. Officious lady had her card machine in her hand, so she was probably working on her bonus.

What would happen if you just put your helmet on, and wore it onto the plane? Or is there a rule for that too?

@Harry Flashman, I think if you said you’d been head butted on an EasyJet flight a few years ago and successfully claimed £100000 damages against the airline you’d probably get on OK.
They might draw the line at wearing ski boots.

If there's space in the lockers then why would they bother? It would only hold up the flight while they checked who owned what. But if the lockers are full then I've seen them making people keep bags under the seat

Prob happens on full flights where they know there is not enough room for carry on. So instead of putting things in the cargo hold for free, they check for the easy suckers.
Prob happens on near empty flights that are running at a loss to gain some extra income.
People moan about it, but the rules are quite clear about size.
As for 2x bags for ski / boots. Tried it once & the auto bagging machine does not recognise that rule.
Neither did the EJ employee. I handed over a printed copy of the rules from their website that allows it. So much faff, so now my boots just go in with my board.

My experience with Sleazyjet today was good. BHX to GVA early afternoon. Pre checked in online but had bag drop to do. No significant wait.
Had paid for 23kg hold bag and expected mine to be about 21kg. However, the self operated scales showed 23.5kg and implied I needed to pay a supplement. I spoke to nearest member of staff. She asked if there was anything I could transfer to my hand luggage to bring the hold bag weight down. So I took 1 item out, reweighed and it was 23.2 kg, which was acceptable and it printed out my luggage label.
I then popped the removed item back in hold bag (farcical eh?) and went to bag drop desk. Asked to put bag on belt weigh scale and staff member initially looked a bit perturbed. Then he said ‘it’s OK but you need to take it to oversize bag/sports equipment desk’. I went there and it was straight through with no concern.
I suspect my backpack hand luggage may have been slightly over their size and weight limits but nobody looked at or questioned that.
On arrival my hold bag was waiting for me on the normal conveyor, not the oversized bag delivery area.
So no complaints at all about today’s flight. Best of all, I dropped off to sleep as the plane took off and wasn’t roused until the captains announcement to cabin staff to get ready for landing, so a bonus point for that

Flew back from BCN to LGW, this afternoon. As usual, Barcelona gate staff couldn’t care less about cabin bag sizes. However, cabin crew were on it in relation to what could go in the overhead bins. The flight was full, so cabin crew were telling everyone with a rucksack to put it under the seat and to only place paid for large cabin bags in the lockers. Quite a few people ignored the instructions, but that didn’t stop the cabin crew from going along and removing the rucksacks and returning them to the rightful owners so they could put them under the seats. Absolutely spot on.

It’s made very clear when buying the tickets. You get a free small cabin bag that goes under the seat in front. You can then purchase a large cabin bag to go into the overhead locker.

hi all, slight thread bump and drift, i have just booked a last minute cheeky solo final week of the season trip to Les Menuires, bargain apartment and fairly cheap flights and transfers, i have a 3v season pass this year and own kit.
i am flying back from Geneva to Luton with EJ next sat (18th), though i am flying out with Jet 2 tomorrow, they have a decent weight allowance of 22kg for a ski bag for £37 (flight was £67 all in!!), plus a free cabin bag with 10kg (also free small under seat bag).
going out there are no issues with baggage, though i am close to the limit.
but has anyone recently paid for a large sports equipment for EJ coming back via Geneva, windsurf for 32kg, instead of a ski bag at 20kg, and had any issues checking in a ski bag as a "windsurf" at Geneva.
a few years ago i flew out from Gatwick with a "windsurf" and there was not much of an issue, EJ employee at the check in terminals just gave it a cursory look and sent me on my way to oversized baggage.
i flew back via BA that time, and it was within their limits.
just wanted to see if it is similar to Gatwick for EJ at Geneva now, and you just check your bag in on a self check in terminal, and as long as you are within the weight limit, you print off a ticket and are on your merry way to oversize luggage drop off?
i have not paid for my ski carriage yet, but thought i better get on with it just in case they sell out of ski luggage space (??)
