Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Temperatures on Scottish mountains

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
One of my ecological colleagues is initiating a new research project. This requires that he have reliable climate data for Scottish mountains: in particular, records of maximum and minimum temperatures recorded throughout the year.

Naturally, I thought that a Snowhead would know where to go to find this information.

Can anyone point me at a useful website, or alternative source of data?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I would recommend a call to the Met Office. Although they have been forced to go down the commercial route, they do do research and may have the data available (well, I know the data's there as I've input it into their database).

Other people to try are Geoff Monks, the WMO and Reading University Met. department. It may be on the web somewhere, but I reckon it'd be in summary form.

(Now watch while someone finds the dataset on a website rolling eyes )

Heriot Watt University has had a weather station on the summit of Cairngorm for some time, so I'm sure they can help. Here's a link.

You could also post this enquiry on the Winterhighland site, where lots of knowledgeable Scottish mountain people dwell.

Yeah, the Met Office site has summary information. I'm hoping that there's some directly web-accessible data somewhere.

Thanks, everyone for your rapid and helpful responses. I think my mate has now found what he's looking for.

If, in the next couple of years, you come across someone on their hands and knees in the Highlands, exami ning a vanishingly small plant through a hand lens, you'll know who it is!
