 Poster: A snowHead

Hi, never been to a Therme Spa in Germany before. We are skiing in Alpbach in a couple of weeks, pur return flight from Munich to Gatwick is not until 9pm on Friday 20th Feb. We thought to pass the time we could visit a Therme Spa to pass the day; friends of ours had been to one in SW Germany before and raved about it.
Looking on Google there is a big one in Erding; "Therme Erding". The reviews on TripAdvisor are awful though.
There is also one at Bad Aibling, but just wondering if any other SnowHeads could give any advice?
Cheers

Hi. I’ve been to the spa at Bad Ems which is close to Koblenz. Absolutely wonderful and not expensive. It was by the river and had indoor and outdoor pools. Yes, it also had a separate sauna area which was strictly nude but you do get given a towel and generous robe. I actually found it quite liberating to strip off! My husband dared not go in!! They had an outdoor pool with a water feature which I can only describe as being in a whirlpool.
Bad ems itself is lovely and it was where the German well to do would go for their holidays and to take the waters.
I didn’t stay at the adjoining hotel but it isn’t too expensive.

I can also recommend the Therme at Bad Wörishofen, but it is somewhat out of your way coming from Alpbach to Munich.
The Therme at Erding is right next to the airport. Can be very busy at weekends. I've been there on numerous occasions with the kids (when they were kids), but mainly for the slides. The slides are quite something, but not sure whether that is what you are looking for. Have not used the Sauna and Wellness areas there...

The Erding one is near to the airport (close enough to be able to see the planes on approach) so ideal if making a stop on the way home, it is the largest such place in the area around Munich. The centre of Erding is quite pleasant. I believe there is also one in Bad Tölz to the south of Munich. Easy to reach from Alpbach via the Achenpass and Tegernsee (also a good place to stop).

@BRi87, Was in Therme Erding with the kids in July and we had a great time. However I think it is more of a waterslide park and its supposed to be the largest waterslide park in Europe. We didn't get to see the adults only Spa as we had the kids with us though friends have been and liked it.

@munich_irish, sadly the Alpamare in Bad Tölz closed a few years ago. AFAIK nothing has replaced it.

I appreciate this isn't quite what you're asking for, but not far from Alpbach is Atoll at Achensee that would maybe cover your needs, then you could drive back to Munich?

Just looked this place up and noted the water slides. Think the kids will love these so am thinking of going here on our last Saturday (21/02) of our upcoming trip. We are flying out of Munich Airport at 9pm so we could spend all afternoon here that day. One question ...I know it's not France, but can we wear swimming shorts as we don't have Budgie Smugglers and don't really want to get them either!

@BRi87, I've been to the Therme at Bad Aibling and it's pretty good - it's a bit "public pools" vibe as opposed to luxury spa and IIRC there weren't any slides etc for younger ones but it wasn't pricey. I went in August maybe 12-13 years ago so it may have been updated/renovated since. It has outdoor pools which were lovely in summer, no idea if they'll be open in winter.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

@daveqpr, I am not a swimming person but never heard of any such issues in Germany it seems to be a French peculiarity.

Can also recommend Bad Worishofen, although I have not been in Winter. It will add about 2 hours to your drive (an hour each way).

@daveqpr, Was there in the summer and any swim shorts will do.

There is, of course, also the brand new Therme Oberstdorf, which hasn't actually quite fully opened yet...
Wife swears by it. I have not yet been, but if she says it's good, it's good.
But that is, unfortunately, even further out of your way than Bad Wörishofen!
The film gives you a good impression of the countryside around Oberstdorf. For some reason we hardly get to hear any English there at all. Really popular with the Dutch, but hasn't been discovered by Brit travel agents it seems
