Poster: A snowHead

Coming up in Davos, from 5-7 July, is an interesting event for those who want to know more about snow.
The 5th International Conference on Snow Engineering will feature papers and forums on subjects as diverse as:
- "Mechanical properties of snow on ski slopes."
- "Reducing avalanche hazard to US Route 89/191 in Jackson, Wyoming using snow sails."
- "Experimental study on open air storage of snow with simple insulation using agricultural waste."
- "Fuzzy parameters analysis of powder snow avalanches."
Here's the conference website, if you're interested. I think we should know more about "snow sails".

Yes, I think this paper must enter the snowHeads field of knowledge. Let's see if we can get hold of a copy. It's being presented by Nakamura Yoichi, Sugiyama Hiroyasu, and Kamimura Seiji.
The storage of snow (and ice) is actually a very interesting subject. I have a copy of a wonderful little book about ice houses, which were used to store natural ice from frozen ponds and lakes before refrigeration existed. There are examples all over the UK.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

re "snow sails"
The Lake Chutes at Breck have similar structures - placed above them on the ridgeline by Ski Patrol, to break up the wind and reduce the build-up of the cornice.

Yes, giant inflatable cow pats (but preferably not inflated with hot air) could be ideal. Excellent suggestion.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.
