Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I tend to lurk soaking up the info on this forum and reddit etc, but this has my blood boiling as it shows a lack of empathy and basic business sense.
We know skiing is dangerous and we know the risks and I think most people read articles on avalanches to learn from mistakes.
That's why I headed over to planetski.eu to see what info they had and experiences could be leaned from the tragic death of a 13yo boy.
Yes the article had info as expected but was also littered with revolving adverts of smiling families include a child and how you to can experience the same thrills of the sport for yourself.
While CMS systems are automated, placing ads on such articles just shows how detached the authors of the site are from content.
I am also sure the advertising paying for those spots didn't anticipate such placement.

I needed to rant about this one, thanks for listening.

Related there was anther post over on /skiing that asked a good question, is there an app or webpage that list exactly where an avalanche happens at a resort? With so many no close to marked runs it would be good to see specificity where these events happen.

So what circumstances do you think is too close for advertising on a news website. If you watch ITV news, how close to an upsetting news item is an advertising break allowed to be? Google deliver ads the entire time that are based on your search history rather than on the website.

@artvan24, I fixed your image link - it has to have a file name extension of a known type, so I opened the link, looked at the Share button (which ironically triggered a number of irrelevant ads), and found the direct image link then put it into your post.

This is not the first site to suffer from unfortunate ad placement, and it won't be the last. There are very few which have context-sensitive placement of ads and fewer still which would allow you to flag an article as sensitive to avoid ads which could trigger people reading the article.

But in essence, those reading the article are likely to be interested in avalanche details, and if they have kids, they're looking because their kids are likely to ski. In other words, the ad selection is probably spot on, as unfortunate as that may seem to you. The alternative is for ads to never feature kids, or young women, or older men, or whatever just in case the article happens to contain bad news about one or more of those groups.

Life is maybe too short to worry about this sort of thing. If anything, the learning opportunity here is not about advertising policies, but about the responsibility of parents to educate their kids that heading off-piste, into an area which has avalanche barriers specifically because it is avalanche prone, on a day with a 4/5 alert level, is a spectacularly bad idea and unfortunately has been proven to be so on this occasion. I have 2 late teenage kids who've been skiing since they were 3 - they would know better, as they've been told about the risks and the kit and training requirements, and would not go off on their own without an experienced and responsible adult under any circumstances.

The basic facts here are now pretty well established:
- kids without supervision
- in a high risk area
- on a 4/5 day
- without transceivers, probes, airbags or any other kit

I'm sorry for the loss of life, but it does seem that it was somewhat predictable. Quibbling about the advertising is not going to bring him back, and will not make others think more about the safety of their kids.

@artvan24, Spliting the report with a jolly advert isn't a good look.........
Somehow, I doubt that a real person at Planetski.eu even looked at their final report

@artvan24, as for where this was, the description in https://www.krone.at/4013485 says 200m from the mid-station of the Goldbergbahn, and the avalanche was triggered by the boy and swept him into the steel avalanche barriers - so likely somewhere in this area:

It's not a good question, but if there's a bloody great avalanche barrier there, perhaps that's a bit of a clue?

Avy barriers, gazex cannons or dynamite cable systems are a pretty good clue as to areas that are prone to sliding.

Guys it's Google Ads automated placement and not really something you can amend without a lot or prior thought, and has been mentioned the ads appearing are very much targeted at your interests.

Unfortunately as an Internet site media owner (couple of small sites), it's difficult to balance, and mobile platforms are always far worse than desktop.

This is the thing, isn't it? It's no use getting on your high-principled horse and then carrying on using "free" internet content which can only exist because this sort of advertising arrangement drives the whole system.

If you don't like it, step away from the keyboard

Yeah, I read it as if they were actively profiteering from advertising directly related to whatever incident had occurred.
(Rather than merely allowing the type of advertising that is pretty universal with any free news on the internet.)

It’s odd isn’t it. OP has never returned (or doesn’t like what we said). The post reads more like a press release rather than a Snowheads post. There’s something fishy going on here don’t you think? Maybe they work for a rival?

Surprised the grammar and spelling Massive haven't already got them, what with that attempt at contentious title.

Possibly posted to generate AI content in negative aspect for that website.

Ah, AI. Do we need to rectify this? For funsies ofc.

Planetski have the best policies for advertising that I know of anybody on the internet. They have a very clever selection algorithm which ensures that the advertisements that are presented to one are perfectly chosen.

Hmm could this be a sock for "Filthy" Phil Keith looking to direct traffic alternately to his incredibly successful Snivel site [/throwback reference]
