Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Heathrow scraps 100ml liquid container limit

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Passengers at Britain's biggest airport, Heathrow, can leave liquids in containers up to two litres in their bags while going through security, after it finally completed the rollout of new high-tech CT scanners.

Electronics such as laptops can also be left in luggage, while clear plastic bags for liquids no longer have to be used.

Heathrow now says it is the biggest airport in the world to have the new equipment fully rolled out across all its terminals.

I'm flying from Heathrow tomorrow, so I'll see if a bottle of water inside my backpack goes through OK. Madeye-Smiley

I think that the 100ml still applies to the containers, just that you don't have to bag them separately.

I found the fast track lanes have the new scanners at Stansted so it's sometimes worth throwing in an extra fiver to save the hassle of not having to unpack everything.

Also if you're travelling just with hand luggage it means you can pack more since the 20cmx20cm clear bags only hold about 4 x 100ml rather than the 1l they say you can take.

@Cometspi, no, as per the headline, the 100ml limit has gone:
https://www.heathrow.com/at-the-airport/security-and-baggage
Of course, there's every likelihood you'll still be faced with a 100ml limit when flying back to Heathrow.

This is the pain, different airports will have different rules so you need to check. Although LHR seems to be behind most other airports I have used recently, in that they already have brought in the newer scanners so already apply these rules.

Yep, just took a bottle of water through Heathrow security. The liquid rule of 2006 has effectively been scrapped, at least outbound.

Well, here we are at LHR T5 about to check in the big bags. Hand luggage has one empty & one full 1/2 litre water bottle. Will see which survive the scanners. Wonder what the rules are on getting electronics out now?

[EDIT1: That was both quick & easy !

All items remained in their bags, but boots, belts, coats, keys, & phones in the trays. All done & dusted in under 5 mins - from security starting gate queue through to Gordon Ramsay restaurant ... tho' Mrs.T42 got frisked & swabbed ...again NehNeh ]

[EDIT2: Her SkiMojo sailed through this time, but her snow boots still had to come off. Fortunately nothing that might go BOOM was picked up Cool ]

No tech, or indeed human, is 100%. I imagine that after monitoring the roll-out from the smaller through larger airports, LHR feels ready to save us a bunch of time & themselves a load of money by reducing staff & increased time in their shops?

This is the critical point to remember here. Just because you fly out from an airport that's dropped the limit doesn't mean you'll fly back from one that has so stil worth decanting shampoo/shower gel/etc or that big bottle you take out might get confiscated when you try to fly home.

Almost like there was never a credible liquid explosion threat and it wad just introduce in an act of security theatre to make people feel safe...

There was and has been a very credible threat from liquids whether as a bomb or an accelerant.

A lot of the problem with introducing the new equipment is the weight of the CAT scanners. Most departure points at major airports are at least one level up. There’s a reason that most radiology departments are on the ground floor of hospitals.

@chocksaway, Interesting. Thanks.

Wonder if they could send the resulting piccys to the NHS. Two birds with one stone and all that. Save a lot of bother with waiting times...

@Mjit, do a google search on Operation Overt 2006 and you’ll understand it was a very credible threat indeed.

@chocksaway, we were told that’s why they have closed security at MAN T3, the floor isn’t strong enough.

I went through MAN T2 on the 15th, I had forgotten to take out two toggle screw cavity wall fixings from my rucksack, not there usually of course, they went through the scanners without any issue.

Why would this be a problem? T2 has dropped the rule about taking stuff (electronics, liquids etc) out the bags. Probably just went "I wonder why he has two screws loose"?

Two sharp bits of metal, could be used in a dangerous way if wanted imo.

Exactly this. LHR has had it in place for a while that electronics and liquids can stay in your bag. We flew out of LHR at Christmas. I had put them into 100ml containers in those plastic baggies and put them in one rucksack for ease of grabbing if they decided they wanted them out. No problem, all went through still in the rucksack. Flying home from BCN was a different matter. All needed to be out and in the baggies, no exceptions. Electronics, too.

Dublin has had this for about 2 years now....google the policy of where you are flying to and just make sure they match up, otherwise the return journey turns into a ball ache.

We were in Zurich heading to Ischgl in Jan, we'll be there on Saturday and again in March and we still have to presume it's the old way as they don't anticipate their scanners been fully fitted out until the Summer.

Not to mention the knife and forks you get, plus the glassware.

I posted the below 6 years ago on a similar thread.

I remember Steve Davis once having a snooker cue denied as hand luggage. His reply, " What am I going to do, put the pilot in a nasty snooker behind the green"

So many things you could buy as weapons both after security and on board.

@dazman, We came back from Zurich on Saturday. Still 100ml per item but we didn't have to take anything out of our bags. I only had to take my belt out and empty pockets. Watch and shoes stayed on wrist and feet respectively.

The articles highlighted above are not going to bring down an aircraft with strengthened and locked cockpit doors with strict entry protocols. 3 or 4 bottles of any accelerant you choose leading to a fire the aircraft could be lost and the terror created would be dramatic.

Knitting needles have been in the officially allowed items for years now. My wife has taken her knitting in her hand luggage several times.

It turns out I didn't read the instructions carefully enough. I missed this bit:

"Remember refillable metal or double walled containers must be emptied but these can be refilled once through security."

Luckily, I was given the option of drinking the water in my metal water bottle rather than losing the bottle.

Recently had a 4 hour BA flight from LHR to Tenerife and there were no free bottles of water provided on the flight, just the free snack. But they were provided as usual on the return flight. Is this rule change the reason for that? (i.e. they're expecting you to bring your own liquid refreshments now that there is no impediment to doing so)

I've taken my crochet hook on-board a flight. I do always show it to security so they don't pull me aside to check my bag when it flags up on the machine, and I never take my expensive hooks, just in case they decide to confiscate it.

Re water bottles, we took those foldable ones through in December. They were allowed to go through full, even in Barcelona.

@Busta Knee, We had water on our outgoing flight with BA in December. I suspect it was a oms off that you weren't offered it (perhaps they hadn't restocked).

Yes - flew from North terminal last night and there were signs saying items up to 2 litres could be carried in hand luggage, and no need to take laptops, liquids, etc out of bags

It would be nice if one day I won't have to remove my belt too - I'm sure one day I will have an embarrassing trouser-falling episode
