@snowdave, it's a four-wheel bag, so you lose the bottom four inches of the case whereas the one I have just bought is a two-wheel bag; I agree I was after a hardshell too but shall have to learn to restrain myself when over-packing it. The challenge is to get 23kg (sic, this really is the BA cabin limit) into it, so as to make the maximum BA load for a cabin bag.

Are hard shell cabin bags more likely to be nabbed to go in the hold on full flights? The swiss air crew certainly went for ours over our soft backpacks the same size when we were at the gate in Zurich one of the few times we flew. One had a massive crack in it when we got home. Think that was an aerolite, seemed to be a much weaker sort of plastic then our big hardshell cases. Perhaps we were just unlucky, don't fly enough to know if this is usually the CASE or not.

@Glosterwolf, I think this may be some truth in this. On Swiss LHR>GVA early season, they ignored our SnoKart Kabin bag but seemed to be taking a number of hard shell bags out of the line instead (including ones that were smaller).

@Glosterwolf, BA are also keen on grabbing wheelie cabin bags for the hold (and damaging them). Also, if that does happen to you, I would strongly recommend removing any helmet first, I had one damaged despite loads of padding.

Yeah, fortunately I had the foresight to think it might happen and put all the helmets in the soft backpacks, I did try and pushback a bit but they weren't having any of it. We did have 8 bags with us to be fair and our youngest wasn't much bigger than some of them

Agreed - I have a mix of 2 & 4 wheel bags; in this case the 4-wheel option is so large anyway, that the extra 3L of space didn't tip the dial for me. It's swings and roundabouts on this, as IME the hard shell bags can be packed more densely without bulging to the extent that they'll fail a size check, so the actual amount you get into either is very similar. 90% of the time I use a smaller wheely bag or backpack so that I can meet the tighter bag restrictions of almost every other airline - no point having a BA-compatible bag if you're connecting to American Airlines!
I've also just got some of these for family holidays: https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/trekking-carry-bag-40-l-to-60-l-duffel-500-extend/156359/c405c71m8383299 They are the perfect size (if not overstuffed) for cabin baggage, and can also expand/contract as necessary for different airlines and different modes of transport.

I think it partly depends on what other equipment and luggage you have. Personally I opted for the SnoKart Boot & Helmet rucksack, it isn't on their website unfortunately but is at Ski Exchange. It fits as Carry on with Easyjet and most airlines, takes my boots, helmet, goggles and fits other essentials such as documents, gloves etc. That leaves both my hands free to pull my skis in my sportube and a small suitcase for clothing. I figure I can replace clothing and skis if they get lost but not my custom moulded boots so easily.

@SnoodyMcFlude, @t44tomo, You've sowed the seeds of doubt with your common sense words and figures and @Snowmadmum, that snokart one is way nicer too. Far less strappy and faffy.
I'm returning the Amazonian clone forthwith.
@SaraWelsh, Apologies for slightly highjacking your thread and thanks for actually starting it. I had no idea there were so many options!
I look forward to breezing around Newcastle and Heathrow next weekend with my new acquisition

I'm not keen on the shaped boot bags that have shoulder straps and would much prefer to shove whatever I have on my back. Any suggestions? I do have a 30L Patagonia that would technically do the job - I could measure it to make sure it'll fit in the size requirements, but it doesn't have an internal velcro strap to keep the boots in place. |
On that, all I'd say is that you probably don't need any straps to keep boots in place.
On the rest of the thread... lots of options.
- I found the weight of [ski] boots plus the other stuff I can't afford to lose was annoying in a back pack, so I switched to a 2 wheel roller at maximum legal carry (MLC) on.
It's hard wheeling two things, so at the same time I switched away from a wheely hold bag. I relocated some weight from hold bag to the wheeled cabin bag, making both of them about 13kgs loaded.
- I struggled to get a helmet/ goggles into the MLC, but then there's also the "personal item" allowance.
So I just stick my helmet and goggles into a helmet bag (yes, it's a thing)[1], clip that on the roller (so it doesn't swing around) ... and it's all good.
Both wheels and backpack straps seems like indecision to me.

@Snowmadmum, you do know that if you fly BA you can put all your stuff including skis into a single 23kg ski-fitting hold bag for no charge don’t you? (Maybe you fly Swiss hence the sportube is free. Or maybe charter in which case you pay whatever!)

I forgo the helmet bag, and just strap it directly to the case handle - does the job, just unclip it when it goes in the overhead bin. Again - EJ have never raised an issue with that (I guess you could technically just stick it on your head if thy did).
I also don’t like wheeling two things, so when traveling with just the carryon bags, I just double stack the smaller case on the larger - puts a bit of stress on the retractable handle, which I’m sure will shorten its life, but makes things a lot easier. Pick one that’s got a strap to fit over the handle (those aerolites for example). Only faff is when you come to some stairs ….

Perhaps I'm doing EJ an injustice here, but I don't want to be charged extra - my budget is a very slender shoestring.
So, clip it on my under-seat baggage with my newly purchased hammock; if it's questioned, hold helmet in hand, wear hammock on head.
Got it.

Maybe it worries the other passengers?
Never come across that. But then never had any airline (BA, EJ, Swiss, Lufthansa) worry about a helmet strapped to the outside of carry on. But then again I don’t take the wee wee with the carry on size.

Thanks @James the Last, yes I do tend to use Swiss/United or Easyjet/Ryanair, but after some horrendous experiences with soft cases, I now only use hard cases for hold luggage and the Sportube doesn't lend itself to packing around the skis and poles - especially if you have wider skis. I have tried different variations over the years and this combo never fails me, it's secure with combination locks and I pack in air tags and a chipolo for peace of mind (yes, I have lost/damaged luggage PTSD)

I've just got a SnoKart Kabin bag off Vinted.
It is a bit heavy, not ridiculously so, but I'm more concerned about dimensions.
It's meant to be 54cm x 36cm x 24cm, but my tape measure says that SnoKart didn't include the wheels when they measured it. As such, it's a little more over my max dimensions of 56cm x 36cm x 23cm than I'd like. In fact they must have sat on it when they measured the depth anyway.
Seriously thinking about getting the Dremel on it!

I just received my new Snokart boot and helmet bag. I have no hesitation in returning the amazon bag now: It is good but doesn't seem as durable and the snokart design is far better thought out. It's taken my boots , helmet, gloves, goggles (in a they're own large hard case), socks and salopettes. There's no bulging so i can still fit a small toiletry bag and possibly a few more bits n bobs if i want.
Like @Pejoli, I don't like wheeling mutiple things and my wheeled ski bag is pretty large and unweildly to start with (two pairs of skis plus all the other clothes and such), add to that the walk to the hotel is a bit of a shlep, so the back pack will be necessary. I don't think I'll need any kind of hand bag as the flights are pretty short so anything I do need can go in the multitude of pockets of the ski jacket. Which reminds me - I need to re nikwash that.

Just breezed through check in and security.
As a point of interest I know my ski bag is over weight. I was trying to look nonchalant and didn't look at the readout at check in but it got tagged without question.
Now is that because oversized has a maximum weight of over thirty? Or are BA just a bit more relaxed?
I don't fly all that often to know.

As you are easyjet - have you paid for the cabin bag?
Small carry on will only be big enough for boots if you can square them.
Otherwise there are lots of boot/helmet bags.
free small cabin bag
Maximum size 45 x 36 x 20cm
paid for large cabin bag
Maximum size 56 x 45 x 25 cm
Both my helmet/boot bag combos are over 25cm

BA has a lot of higher status customers entitled to 32kg per bag vs the normal 23kg, so my guess is that they don't get too fussed bothering to check what an individual's allowance is. The only time I've been dinged, I had 40kg of skis in a single bag, and I was asked to split into two. In anticipation of this I'd packed some of the skis in a separate bag inside the giant one.

@Gored, Gave this a test run last night with my boots and using my daughter's Primark (of all things) carry on which can be either backpacked or wheeled and it was a tight squeeze when placed in, squared. I won't even get a book in there never mind any extras. The dimensions are spot on and, dare I say, close to being over. My patagonia bag is going to have to be paid for I think. Dammit! Helmet hammocks are on the way - I just hope that EJ aren't being strict about those on the day I fly!

I was was going through all my small cases before Xmas to figure out which ones work for which airlines, and on checking the websites, could not find *any* published weight restriction for the EJ small carryon bags (it’s 15kg for the larger cabin bags).
A challenge there for someone.

Who on earth would want to lug a 40kg bag around, don't BA cap it at 32kg for H&S reasons, even their baggage handlers arent expected to lug 40kgs.

Because it was easier to carry 7 pairs of skis in a single bag since I was also carrying a load of other gear. Splitting the bag at the check in was easy, towing two bags and another giant roller bag wouldn’t have worked unless I’d grown an extra arm.

Just back from a long weekend in Andorra ourselves. Flew with EasyJet. Both the wife and I had rucksacks with helmets in the hammocks and the crew didn’t bat an eyelid. We put the rucksacks under the seat (bit tight!) but no issues at all. Bearing in mind how many people were clearly putting the smaller free rucksacks in the overhead lockers, I don’t think the EJ crew are all that fussed. YMMV!
