Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Saint Gervais- advice please

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi there

A group of us are heading to Saint Gervais next weekend but 2 of the group are only skiing at green run level. Does anyone know if it’s possible to ski back to Saint Gervais from Chalet Sauvage on green runs- I can’t quite make it out on the piste map. Or if it is possible to walk back up to the gondola?

Also any recommendations for nice easy runs to take them on (outside of their lessons) would also be appreciated.

TIA

I can't recall that exact location in St Gervais but I find looking at OpenSkiMap very helpful when trying to work out precise locations, better than the resort maps.

Looking at that it looks like you can take green Mandarines from the restuarant to the Ideal chair. And from there Chateluy will take you back to the top of L'Aplin at Bettex to download back.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

No problem. Chalet Sauvage is off the green Mandarines piste down the Megeve side of Mont d'Arbois. You can continue skiing down that either to the Ideal chair (via a short link piste to the left) or continue all the way down to the bottom where there is the Mont d'Arbois gondola. Either of those lifts take you back up to the top again. Now ski off to the left, seemingly heading for the Finance blue, but about 20 metres beyond the lift buildings there is a signposted link piste to the right taking you down to the green Chateluy run which goes all the way back to Bettex where you download to St Gervais.

Actually you will have had to do part of that to get to Chalet Sauvage in the first place, you would take the Bettex gondola up to "Freddy" (a separate high point on the Mont d'Arbois ridge from which you can't get to Chalet Sauvage) and ski down the nursery run on your left, bearing right keeping on the green run all the way to the Ideal chair. Then Mandarines just under the chair and gondola to Chalet Sauvage.

I imagine your friends will have done most of those pistes multiple times in lessons.

(You can also access and return from Folie Douce entirely on greens, if afternoon jollys are your plan).

As @j b, says, you have a good figure of 8 loop that goes down Mandarines one side & La Finance or Chateluy the other side passing lots of coffee stop opportunities.

If the beginners in the group are nervous I would suggest leaving the Follie Douce about 3.45 to get down that first 500 meter part of the green before the madness, after they will be ok.

I am out next Sat/Sun, so I hope you have sun shine Very Happy

@Apsr2, why Chalet Sauvage? I mean, it's a whole load of fun but the wine prices are ever so slightly over-inflated?

@under a new name, true, but then most of the places on the Megeve side are priced rather extravagently. Good for people watching though.

I’m always surprised by the “hatch” at Cote2000 in megeve, that does a panini, fries & a small beer for 14€.
It’s not all expensive

The reviews of Chalet Sauvage make for an interesting read.
Also, €28 for 6 shrimp?

@under a new name, there is money in Megeve and some places cater for it. Our transfer driver a few weeks ago regaled us with stories of being a driver for the Saudi royal family a previous year, they have a chalet and spend three weeks there every year apparently (actually 5 chalets connected by underground tunnels). He was assigned to a 7-year old boy - there was a separate limousine for each member of the family - and said the problem was that each journey had to be cleared with the large security team. The plum job was being driver for the king who apparently was embarassed by his own cigarette habit so didn't have them ordered in, his chauffeur was routinely given a €500 note to buy him a packet... and keep the change.

I assume they don't drink champagne, but €60,000 (which admittedly does sound unbelievable) is small change to that crowd.

Oh, and I am curious to know which champagne you routinely choose to cook with.
