Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Les Arcs - shopping help - lost all luggage

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi folks,

I need a bit of help. We landed in GVA a few hours ago and there are mountains of bags. Long story short our bags have gone walkies.

The baggage folk don't know where any of them are either.

We have no clothes...(Or skis). We are staying in 1950 and on our way to the resort now after waiting an extra 4 hours.

Can anyone give me advice on where to go and buy everything? Two adults + 5 year old

---
The bags might turn up but assuming the worst.

Thanks
nunp

There’s a few shops in 1950 such as Freeride and Precision ski but they aren’t cheap as they are more top end branded gear type shops.

From a cost perspective you’re probably better off getting up to 2000 on the cabriolet OR you can get the bus to Arc 1600, get the funicular down to Bourg St Maurice and you’ll find plenty of non franchise snow sports shops with everything you need as well as a big Decathlon.

The bus runs from 2000 and 1950 to 1600 and back again fairly regularly - see the timetable for this season here: https://www.calameo.com/read/005689616e3f4e472383d

The funicular from Arc 1600 to BSM is aligned to the bus and vice versa and literally takes no more then 10 minutes down to BSM from 1600. (It’s free if you have your lift passes so I’d get these from the lift pass office by Luigi’s first thing)

If you get the 8am bus from 1950, you’ll be in BSM by 8:45am. The bus stop at 1950 is on the bend of the road just by the cabriolet. If you walk towards the cabriolet and go down the slope in between the Prince Des Cimes and the Jardin and follow it to the road you will see the bus stop. When you get off the funicular you’ll need to walk up towards the station and keep going. It’s a bit of a walk (20 mins or so) so a taxi may be better if you have kids/after if you’ve bought gear. There may also be a bus available but you’ll have to see.

In regards to skis, boots and helmets, I’d recommend using SnowRental. Prices are reasonable and there’s a couple of shops in 1950/2000 you can compare the prices between. You can also usually find a code online to bring the price down a touch.

Ever so sorry to hear about this - Les Arcs is a great resort and I hope you can have this sorted swiftly by midday tomorrow so you only miss a half day of skiing…a bad day in the mountains is always better then a good day in the office!

They've opened a Decathalon in Bourg now. I'd be hitting that up to cover all bases except underwear for the week.

As said above, jump on the funicular down to BSM train station. Decathalon is 1km from there, according to Google maps.

I'm so sorry. Fingers crossed it is resolved swiftly.

Yes, it's next to the big SuperU and the Intermarche where the old GiFi shop was. You might also be able to pick up some basic clothing in Super U as they have clothes there too.

Yes the super u sells clothing including underwear. There is a shuttle bus from the funicular to the super u site.

If it helps a surprising amount of my clothing has come from the intersport next to the super u

I'd heard that the Super U at BSM sold everything a man of the mountains could ever need!! wink Laughing

@Nunp, sorry to hear of what happened, hope you can get sorted soon!

When BA lost our luggage for several days during the pandemic, in Germany, they paid for essential items we needed to purchase but wouldn`t pay for the cost of getting to the shops to buy the items (most shops were closed because of the virus and we had to have taxis to get between the shops that were open). We had to buy some very expensive items (eg from a specialist local foods shop that also sold locally made luxury socks!) and some very cheap items from a couple of supermarkets. We could not get all that was needed in one place. BA did not quibble about the cost of anything for which we had receipts but refused to pay for the taxis. I don`t know if other airlines operate in the same way or if they would bother about the actual cost of clothing and essentials.

Thank you everyone for the advice - what a great community.

They have found 2-4 bags so they should arrive today. The others - they have no idea where they are.

In your experience, assuming the bag is properly lost (or at least not found for weeks). Can we buy replacements for things like hairdryers? Makeup to claim on insurance? Replacement clothing?

The bag that's gone was my wifes (...typical) and I had her whole life in it!

If there are two or more of you traveling ALWAYS split the luggage. Learnt this the hard way when my bag went missing on our first ski-ing holiday! Picked it up at the airport going home. The bag had had a nice break in Spain while we were in Austria!

Probably not what you want to hear, Sorry

PS There is a very nice chap called Mikey Charlton who helps people find their bags or at least tell them where they are. It might be worth posting the info on https://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=172196&start=80

@Nunp, OK the question everyone is wanting to ask - what was the airline?

In a fairly long travelling career I have had bags not arrive on 4 occaisions.

British Airways Monrovia to Rome - the bag didn't make the transfer from Gatwick to Heathrow
British Airways Lyon to Birmingham - this was probably the last flight BA made. I didn't mind not having to lump the bags home and left them to bring them in their van.
Air France Birmingham to Ljubljana - Very short transfer at Charles de Gaulle
Lufthansa Birmingham to Venice - Very short transfer at Frankfurt

Lufthansa took 3 days to bring the bags to our hotel. The other delivered them the next day.

@Nunp, there will be a max limit on your travel insurance and they will ask for receipts for items lost. My best bag loss ever was to Almaty in Kazakstan, 2k chf worth of allowance for immediate replacements. Now that was the best shopping day ever.

@holidayloverxx, yes but they will probably ask for receipts, doesn’t mean it won’t be paid out if you don’t have them, more that there is plenty of admin. I have just sent a ton of online receipts for all sorts when we had a smash and grab incident in Spain. Was easy enough to keep the box tickets happy.

+1 for the airline (& airport / connections)

+10 for biggest carry-on bag you can get away with containing essentials for desired actitives

+100 for the splitting of resources between partners & parties - increased risk something might go missing v. reduced consequences - plus it makes packing for collaborative Embarassed

Jnr Doddsie is on his third trip in a row where they’ve lost his luggage. He’s currently been in a ski resort for a week, with no clothes except what he was wearing on the plane. He’s currently spent £25 on some T-shirts and pants, wears crocs and shorts despite the -20c outside.
Fortunately previous experiences mean he carries his ski boots, gloves , goggles and shell trousers and top with him.

Spent this morning walking around in Bourg, we have got the bare essentials plus ski clothing for the long haired general.

Both my ski bag and her bag have reached Geneva now but based on the fact there was 100s of stray bags lying around, I can't see them getting to us in a hurry. I'll call the insurance company tomorrow to see what I'm covered for.

My guess at the moment is that they will need to be sent back to our house rather than the resort.

Thank you for all the comments and suggestions - really good advice.

It's really put me off a connecting flight next time

@Nunp, you may be surprised, my friends ski luggage was delivered to Ste Foy less than 24 hours after it arrived in Geneva, having been lost somewhere between her connections.
