Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Binding Issue on New-To-Me skis

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Good evening! I purchased some used skis, they have marker airpad biometric bindings on them. When I rotate the screw behind the heel on the bottom (the top screw adjusts the din setting) it clicks and pulls the heel forward. However - when i put the boot in, the heel slips back. Is there any way I'm not adjusting the binding correctly or is the metal 'catch' that clicks behind the thread that rotates when adjusting the screw too worn? Is this replaceable?
I don't have any local shop to fix this (We are hundreds of miles from any snow), but am handy. Do you have a recommendation on choosing a replacement binding if that is what is needed? Thanks so much for any help!

@AndoRA, welcome to snowHeads.

Those bindings are waaaay out of indemnity and personally I wouldn't use them. They're also only compatible with flat alpine boot soles not the latest GripWalk soles.

If you want to persevere with them then yes, the forward pressure adjustment is too worn to hold the heel under tension, which was/is a common problem on aging bindings of that design. If you completely 'wind-off' the upper heel from the lower track* you'll be able to see which part is worn. It's unusual for the worm drive in the underside of the upper heel to be worn, instead it'll mostly likely be worn shoulders on the raised rectangular teeth on the base track. The base track is rivetted on so difficult (but not impossible) to replace but Marker don't sell the part.

Usually the wear on the teeth is in just the one area on the track (to match the original users sole length) so apart from completely swapping out the bindings the easiest fix would be to adjust the fore/aft position of the toe on the track a little. Then when the upper heel is installed and its length/forward pressure adjusted correctly for your boot sole length (ie the screw head is flush with its surround when the boot is installed) the worm drive will engage fresh unworn/undamaged teeth a bit further along the track. It'll mean that your boot centre line is going to be slightly fore or aft of the mounting line on the ski - but you're not really going to notice that providing you've not moved the mount more than approx +/-15mm. And remember to adjust the second ski to match.

* the upper heel will usually only come off rearwards and to enable this you'll probably have to bend/punch the last 'rung of the ladder' in the base track downwards to allow the upper heel to pass over it.
