Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

La Plagne or Alpe d’Huez

Hi everyone,
I’m planning a ski trip to France with a group of friends starting March 6th. We are currently debating between two options: La Plagne (staying in Montalbert) and Alpe d’Huez (staying in Auris-en-Oisans).
We are looking for wide, long runs—mostly blues and reds. I have a few concerns regarding the infrastructure and terrain:
• Alpe d’Huez: I noticed the lifts seem a bit older, with quite a few gondolas (which I personally dislike).
• La Plagne: I can see many modern, fast chairlifts with high capacity, which is a big plus for me. However, looking at the trail map, the terrain appears somewhat flat with a massive amount of blue runs.
Is my impression correct? Which resort would you recommend for better cruising on wide red/blue slopes? Also, how is the run availability in early March—do these resorts tend to have many closures at that time? Where the snow quality is better in that period ?

Assuming that's not still French holidays, I'd go to la Plagne. I found the pistes around Montalbert to be really quiet. In the wider area, there's a huge array of blue and red cruiser pistes.

I also think la Plagne should have better snow, being generally higher across the area and more predominantly north facing.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Note that the lift out of Montalbert is an unavoidable gondola.
