Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Italy Cable Car Crash

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
This happened a few days ago, but I don't think it's been mentioned here before.

Dozens of people were left stranded after two cabins collided with the cable car's upper and lower stations near the village of Macugnaga in Piedmont.
A cable car accident in Italy's Piedmont region on Tuesday left at least six people injured, with helicopters deployed to rescue about 100 others, according to local authorities.

Maybe it's just my perception, but there do seem to have been several cable car incidents in Italy in recent years.

I try not to look to be honest. I'm much better at being on gondolas and chairs than I used to be as they're a necessary part of skiing. But I try not to think about the what will happen if they fail...

I always watch ‘Where Eagles Dare’ the week before I go, just to get a few tips on escaping from a doomed cable car.

Laughing

Filmed 20 mins from where I live. One of the original cable cars from the film is located near the mountain station (Feuerkogel).

Amusingly, one of the buildings seen in a panoramic shot of the valley isn't actually from the era that the film was based on.

A nice place to live I’m sure. I’ll be passing the ‘Schloss Adler’ two weeks today, hopefully it will be surrounded by snow like it was 3 years ago when I last visited. Not been to the area where the actual cable car scenes were filmed.

Italy is the mountain-lift crash capital of the world.

They have a serious safety problem.

Can't think of another country anywhere on the planet that has so many big lift accidents, and so often.

Funny you should say that. I went up Sugarloaf in Rio de Janeiro in October and prepared for it by watching Roger Moore and Richard Kiel’s antics in and exiting the cable car. I felt fully prepared for emergencies provided I had a stunt double.

Oooh. Off topic, but would you recommend Sugarloaf? We're off to Brazil in August. Stops in Sao Paolo, Rio, Iguazu, and Ilha Grande. Mr. O has Christ the Redeemer on his must do list. I was looking at Sugarloaf but might end up flying that one solo.

Do it. And do the premium pass so that you miss the queue. Aim for sunset. The view over Rio is far better than Christ. Do Christ early. The bus from the beach via GetYourGuide was dead easy.

 You know it makes sense.

A friend of mine did sunset at Sugarloaf and raved about it. She did throw money at it to make it happen as they ended up running late. I'm not above doing the same if it means skipping the queue.

Thanks!

You miss both the cable car queues up and down. So that’s 4x. And you get to wait in an air con room and given a bottle of water Wink

Sugarloaf is well worth doing. The views were fabulous. Christ the Redeemer is great too, but the cable car up to Sugarloaf was something else.

Also recommend a short (20 minute) helicopter tour round both attractions!
