@pjkais2003, doing something new in your 50s is terrific - especially something as great as skiing!

@pjkais2003, It's never too late, as I've said many a time. Learning to ski as an adult requires patience and understanding. And from the student as well
I didn't start until my mid-30s, then did the SCGB course at 39, loads of ski leading, living in Switzerland, getting in a place in a ski resort, then became a ski instructor starting at 50. Ended up (sadly now on my own) living in a large chalet a couple of minutes walk from lifts, running 4 holiday (and one full-time) rental apartments.
You just never know where skiing will take you.

Great post @pjkais2003 !
Everyone should give snowsports a go! In my experience, the majority of people who do so, love it and are hooked.

This!
Late 30’s starter….Hooked from the first binding “click” in. Invested in a shed load of instruction. Met the current Mrs Jäger on a snowHeads bash. Moved to the mountains in Austria 9.5 years ago to run a B&B and a massive lifestyle change.
You indeed just never know where skiing will take you.

One week, sometimes two weeks a year for 60 years. Still love it. Still get the thrill of clicking into the skis. Still weep at the beauty of the mountains…..

Skiing - Its just like another white powder just as addictive, but better for your health - but more expensive (So I am told!)

I do think carving skis changed skiing fundamentally and made it much more accessible to a wider population. I remember first trying carvers in 2000/2001 and finding them amazing compared to what had gone before. That may say something about my technique (or maybe lack of....) but, suddenly, you could click into these things, put them on their edge and they just turned! I wished they'd existed 25 years earlier when I first put on reach height, somewhat unwieldy, skis with screwed on edges and ankle straps in the absence of brakes. Still, I persevered and gained a lifelong love of skiing although haven't done as much as I'd have liked.
So, for those new to it - enjoy and do as much as you can

Welcome to Snowheads! I love the way tour enthusiasm comes through!
I was 38 when I started and couldn't believe I hadn't done it sooner. Like you, I am obsessed.
You're in good company here, we love snowsports and will chat about it on here way past the time when folks in real like are sick of talking about it.
Have you discovered the fun of stalking the webcams yet? Once you pick your next trip, you'll be watching them constantly.
Re the helmet. We had Salomon ones with built in visors for the whole family. Have only just got rid as the kids had outgrown, I had a hard fall, so binned mine, and Mr. O has had his 5 years so time to replace as it's had some knocks. We've now all got separate goggles, which we find better for visibility, but the Salomon ones worked a treat for us. Got them via Amazon

Skiing IS a drug...
I first took it in 1980. A forced year of rehab during covid, didn't work so go more now, always been an addict

@pjkais2003, ah Chatel, great memories. I took my dad here on his first ski trip when he was 59 and he loved it, going to Courmayeur the year after. That would be about 2002/3.
Quite out of the blue, we were having a chat about life and he just said I'd love to go skiing ( I'd been going for a few years with my mates)...... mates were OK with him coming on a lads holiday and he loved it!

coming up 72yr and been skiing since a lad at school, missed a couple of years due to family and one covid but looking forward to this years trip early march . Our daughter son and partners plus five grandkids and another on the way getting his/her first trip in an unborn state this week, they should just about be arriving in switz as of now . A few pals and their girlfriends went to selva 50 yrs ago the week after franz klammer won the val gardena, was on the tv with david vine? commentating in just under 2 minutes and mine took to ski hols like a duck to water so knew then she was the girl for me and we still go albeit nowadays more cruising the blues than hurtling down. I reckon its the best holiday you can have as cant think about work or home when you are on the slope whatever your ability ,a few apres beers a nice meal and sleep like a baby .
