Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Overwhelmingly proud. Our four started almost as soon as they could walk and have all done at least a season and are very very good skiers. Passed me years ago! They are now at the point they get very concerned if I am going to manage the harder outings planned- eg avoiding the long lift queue back to SFL from Valmorel via reverdy which was sweet but unnecessary! Most proud this year when they took the bill for a slope slide lunch for the very first time though!

I tried this with Jnr this Christmas, putting him on a pair of 2nd hand skis that were so well used, after sharpening them twice, the edge completely peeled away in a couple of places.
Didn’t seem to hold him back though, although he said he could feel there was no grip in certain parts of the turn.

I’ve read this thread with great interest. I’m in a bit of a different situation, but also have similar feelings of my own. I’m in my mid 40’s and just recently got back into skiing after my Dad arranged a big skiing bash for the extended family for his 70th. I used to regularly ski with my Dad back in my teens and early 20s, but haven’t been for a couple of decades (life and all that nonsense getting in the way!). Personally, it was quite a relief to find most of my old skill flooded back within the first half day. However, the dynamics compared to the rest of the family had changed significantly. I am now far more capable than my Dad, bearing in mind we were relatively on a par last time we skied (not at all surprising, considering the ages!). Though, I didn’t mind going out skiing with him (or my wife, of a similar level to Dad, though she’s still learning). I’m happy to slow it down and work on technique, though I also went out on speedier runs with the BiL. I have my own 6 year old daughter, who we inaugurated into the skiing world with a week’s worth of lessons, which she loved and came top of the class in the awards they did at the end of the week. She can’t wait to do more and being the competitive little sod she is she can’t wait to be better than Daddy. My brother in law, who I hadn’t skied with previously is of a similar level to me, despite skiing more regularly, however whilst he tends to be mildly faster with his balls out style, I have a more finely tuned technique. There were various others present of different levels, but overall it was interesting to compare my level to my Dad’s, whilst my daughter is just starting out but already has her eye on defeating the old codger. I will be immensely proud when she achieves this. At the end of the day, surely the aim of the game is to produce offspring that are better versions of ourselves??

I recognise that philosophy, even if I never thought to put it into words. Great thought.

Of course you want them to be better than ourselves, but you also want to stop them being better for a long as possible and make them work for it. My son surpassed me at skiing when he was 8, but I'm still holding my 14 year old daughter at bay and I'm not convinced she'll ever be better than me. There are various sports I can still beat my son at, but the number is slowly dwindling.

@Cardo, true.. I am pleased they are excelling at the skiing ..

I am not pleased they make me feel bad for waiting around for me. Sad

I just wish I could keep up. We had a few instances this holiday of me knowing where we were heading as I’d looked at the piste map and mini me 1 and 2 had skied past the exit rolling eyes despite being told.. wait at junctions Mad

Try applying some superglue to the base and lightly tossing in a local golf bunker wink

Get a one to one lesson for 2-3hrs every trip, the best move I made. I left it until I was older then 42 to do this Toofy Grin

Tighten up your piste skiing and off-piste will just seem like the next progression, hopefully snowHead

The trouble with my kids is that I forced them to ski at a young age; yes they were the toddlers turning blue with cold in the ski school crocodile. But they are now very natural.

On his first ever foray off piste, my lad showed a level technique that took me about a decade of lessons to get to (not a high bar BTW).

I'm now making them do ski touring as punishment.
