Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Long weekend in Austria

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Group of 3, 2 decent skiers and one decent boarder, going somewhere for a long weekend in late January. Have flights to Memmingen as the times suit and they're very cheap and will be hiring a car, ideally looking to go somewhere max 90 mins drive from Memmingen.
First on the list was St Anton (I've been before a few times) but there's basically no Friday to Monday accommodation available for any reasonable price, there or in any resorts in the area.

Looking now at silvretta Montafon, not sure which village would be best stay in for easy slope access, ski rental nearby and a bit of apres?
Or if anyone has any other suggestions that might have weekend accommodation in the area, open to Switzerland also?

Where are you looking? There are several options for apartments on Airbnb for both the last weeks of January (as you didn’t say which one you’re going) in St Anton. More on VRBO as well. And some on the St Anton website too. About €1,000 for four nights for three people which seems value for St Anton/Lech.

Oh didn't even think of Airbnb, was looking on booking.com, St Anton website and Google hotels, will check out Airbnb!
Flights are 23rd -26th January.

@omicron, could you stay in Klostertal?? Stuben, Langen, Klosterle, Wald, Dalaas??

Somewhere like this?? chalet in Dalaas

I stayed in a nice apartment in Dalaas when I flew into Friedrichshafen for a weekend in the Arlberg.

Easy drive up to car parks at Stuben, Alpe Rauz, Zurs or Lech to access all parts of Arlberg.

A lot cheaper than St Anton and shorter transfer time from Memmingen too. Not much apres and designated driver couldn't really partake anyway! Confused

Ski hire at Sport Milanovic at the Sonnenkopf gondola was a lot cheaper than usual Arlberg cartel prices Shocked

Excellent restaurant at Gasthof Rossle in Braz https://maps.app.goo.gl/8CAm3XRAVXHHsfJVA

@omicron, Getting short term accommodation especially over a weekend in the St Anton area is now difficult and expensive even in January. I assume you have looked at Pettneu, Flirsch & Schnann? The Klostertal probably has more options and a shorter drive if coming from the west. Easy enough to get a bus to Stuben/ Zürs / Lech if you dont fancy driving. I believe the car parks at Zürs & Rauz are still free. What isnt really possible is doing apres in St Anton and then getting back without paying out large sums for a taxi. Fingers crossed it will start snowing!

It's been a long while (15 years) since I did the "long weekend in Austria from southern Germany" thing, but even back then, it was tricky to get accommodation over a weekend until fairly last minute, as places hold out for a full week booking as long as possible.

Within 90 minutes of Memmingen, the two that immediately come to mind are
- Kleinwalsertal (recommended staying in Riezlern).
- Damüls-Mellau (Mellau side is closer to the airport).

I've also had great days in some really small resorts like Berwang and Laterns, but those are definitely last minute decision locations if they happen to get a lot of snow.

Thanks for all the replies, got a few options in the arlberg area but all either very inconvenient or fairly extortionate, definitely veering towards going towards silvretta Montafon now, looking at staying in Schruns, any reason I shouldn't?! Assuming the snow finally arrives by then!
Or should I be looking at one of the other villages?

They're 2 resorts I hadn't even considered, I'll check that out thanks!

If you have a car and don't mind using it, Schruns is as good as anywhere in the valley, you can always drive up to other liftbases at Tschagguns/Golm, St Gallenkirch, Gaschurn or Gargellen to better explore those areas.

I think you need the Wild Pass to do everything in the valley, but maybe there's enough from the 6 liftbases in the 140km Silvretta Montafon area itself:

Thanks for all the help, ended up emailing about 50 hotels in st Anton and schruns, found a really good value hotel in st Anton for 3 people for 2 nights b and b for 550, and a not so good value, much fancier one across the road for the other night for 450 for a triple room, but reckoned 1000 euro for 3 people and 3 nights b and b right beside the nassereinbahn is as good as I'll get!

Next step is trying to decide whether to buy a 4 day pass for 3 hours skiing the first day and 4 hours the last day, or skiing half days in Wald on route which seems to be good value!

@omicron, I do regular weekend trips to St Anton and often end up staying in two different places. You often find odd rooms for one night at reasonable (for St Anton) prices, just have to put up with the inconvenience of moving hotels, not so bad if you get ski & boot storage next to the Galzig/Nassereinbahn. Note you can buy half day from 12:00 plus there is an "hour card" which gives you money back if you return it in 2 / 3 / 4 hours, though the savings over a normal ticket are fairly small. Also note a discount for 64 and over.
