One of the issues of no substantial snow in resorts is that the various technical departments (council workers) have done a tremendous job of clearing the footpaths and roads down to the tarmac, however all it takes is for some light drizzle/dank conditions during the day and then as temps dropped from +4 to +2 and then lower whilst having dinner the tarmac becomes sheets of black ice in places, so best to walk on any old snow still lying around.
Roads must have been lethal as well.
That said didn't stop me going flying earlier in the day when I went down to meet my daughter who had just arrived, just slipping into my hiking boots (Danner Ice grip soles) with the laces in the boots to then walk across the parking, for one of the loose laces to catch the eyelet on the other boot and end up doing the resulting Superman impression, could have been so much worse as I landed with arm out to protect myself & shoulder taking the impact and and palm cut up from the loose asphalt.

@Weathercam, Horrible.
That can so easily end up with a Rotator Cuff injury (if not worse), which takes months to heal (with rehab) and can be very debilitating. Ask me how I know!

I've always said that walking around icy ski resorts is far more dangerous than the actual skiing!

Very true. Over the years chatting with fellow visitors on crutches or a leg in a cast, invariably they mentioned the incident that ending their skiing or boarding was a fall when walking in resort.

@Alastair Pink, we had loads of them, but I have no idea what has happened to them all. Perhaps I should do the same?

The seasonnaire shuffle is your friend. Doesn't work in ski boots though.

Yes. I don't know what the "seasonaire shuffle" is but my natural gait is very long strided and I have to consciously reduce my stride length on slippery surfaces. Also use ski poles, walk on the snowy patches, use some kind of additional grippy things (which always get lost). Or all of the above.

I assume it has to be nonchalant and be so ingrained that it can still work when "Four sheets to the wind"!

This is a v good point. And my long stride inevitably means heel strike, which is all wrong on slippery surfaces. Doing a long stride AND putting the foot down flat leads to a strikingly Ministry of Silly Walks thing.

And a major rule, don't walk with your hands in your pockets, as if you start to go, you can use your arms to balance and try for a recovery, or if all else fails, grab on to your partner and bring them down with you as well

And if your partner goes over, don't try to save them. Especially if they're carrying skis.

Apropos the helmet discussion(s). Wearing one when you smack down onto a pavement is not a bad idea.

Handy tip: Bubble wrap "Doon the back of yer troozers" acts like a Coccyx Cushion...and if you fall back, lets anyone in the vicinity know that you might need help.

I always think the most important place to wear a helmet when out skiing is going to the ‘loo. Inevitably stairs, inevitably tiled, quite possibly no handrail either.

@James the Last, GripWalk (or touring) boots make this a lot less hazardous. See also: walking through the self-service restaurant carrying a tray of coffee and creamy cakes...

Lot of seniors on SH.
Watch the ice.
Not good for the hips or knees.
Walk safely out there, people.

I'm tired of "seniors". Another unnecessary American euphemism which says a lot about people's attitude to ageing. Just as "passed" instead of "died" says a lot about attitudes to death. If we don't say these things then, of course, they don't happen. Nobody is old. Nobody dies. Seniors just pass. So that's all right then, isn't it? Bah humbug.

I'm not keen on the word 'littlies' but I guess most of those portmanteau words are going to annoy someone or another. Also not keen on 'passing' because of its connotation of an afterlife. Can't say I'm too bothered by 'seniors'.

"Littlies" is a bit twee but I can live with it, as I could live with "oldies". "Senior" is a perfectly good word with a clear meaning. Seems a shame to bastardize it.
