Just looking at snowminds, it’s a fair hit cheaper than snowskool, and my instructor from Hemel (he’s IASI3) recommended it. Warren Smith was my 1st option, but some pretty unreasonable pricing + no accom. Will keep this thread updated over the next few days with what I plan on doing.

Well it is clearly something you want to do, if you have the time and the money, and parental permission then I'd say go for it. Worst case you'll decide it's not the career for you, but hopefully will still have a good time, best case you love it and make a lasting career from it.

@joshyp, snowminds website suggest you can apply for next season courses, worth chatting to them to see if it would be possible to get out there this year or not.
Who is your instructor at Hemel btw?

If they were 18 and had finished school that would be more true. (Although there is still the opportunity and financial cost involved pursuing a career you haven't even done work experience in to see if it's something you enjoy). However, not finishing school makes the current situation more problematic, as in the case skiing doesn't become a career (and I suspect the vast majority of those starting the ski instructor path never make it into a career long term) you leave yourself with no other qualifications. It's why working at Hemel while finishing school/going down the trade apprenticeship route is probably a safer long term choice.

I thought you were moving to France to make a career out of being a ski instructor? You can't do that and be at college in UK.

So that’s two years then after you retake this year ? You’re then looking at doing a course after your education finishes. Assuming it finishes May/June 2028 you’ll be booking onto a course Jan 2029 then surely?
So back to the often suggested route of taking the l1 indoors and start working/gaining experience at Hemel. But make sure that doesn’t affect your course.

Good idea. Doing something you will enjoy, and you feel will help you get a first, vital, step on the road to where you want to go, might well help you to focus on your course. And be completely different from your college work and help you meet new people in a different environment.

I am not currently going to school, which means I’m doing nothing till September. My attendance is below 40% and I have binned a term, and am keen to do something I enjoy before I continue

@joshyp, ok that makes sense. So if you qualify, resit a year and then do two more years after that your license (for BASI L1 or L2) would need a cpd point to continue being valid.

Good luck @joshyp. I haven't commented previously because I am not a ski instructor and have no insight into training courses. But it does seem that you are moving towards a sensible plan - both starting on the first steps towards finding out whether you can make a go of a major ambition, but at the same time ticking off completion of the qualifications that are generally expected for most careers and are much easier to pick up while you are school age. We all hope the ski instruction side will be a success, but being ready to tackle "plan B" is also important.
(Plus, don't forget about Andorra, suggested in a post above as a possible place to instruct since it isn't subject to EU restrictions).

@j b, the Andorra door may close in the coming years. There’s closer ties with the EU being forged and the govt here are making small changes to align closer to the EU. Whereas now anyone from anywhere can come to work without any additional hoops to jump through, in the the future it’ll be easier if you are an EU citizen and more difficult for others. Talk of this has already dissuaded many Argentinians from coming this season - it’s where the majority of Andorra’s seasonal workers come from. That said, ski instructing may be exempt from any incoming rules since they’ll be classed as qualified workers and there just won’t be enough people coming from the EU to instruct. Any planning to come in the future will need to just keep a close eye on this.
If you already have a foot in the door, you’ll be ok though.

@joshyp, CPD is continuous progressional development. At L1/L2 you have to refresh this every 3 years. You can do an actual CPD course or, take another exam and that will reset your time for CPD. So as an example, if you took the IASI route, and passed in March 26, by March 29 you'd need to take another course. You could do a L1 telemark or a L1 Adaptive course at Hemel, both of which count as CPD and would also both tick off your 2nd discipline for L3.
