Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

FRANCE: Farmer blockades, travel/supply chain disruption, civil unrest, etc.

If you look at South West France using Google Maps (Traffic mode), you should see that there is considerable disruption to the road network (farmers creating barriers out of straw bales, old tyres, and manure).

The straw that 'broke the camel's back' is that farmers are being required to slaughter their entire herd of cattle just because one cow may develop symptoms of a certain disease.

There is widespread support for the farmers' plight.

There are already rumours that routes to ski resorts will be blockaded (hitting the hedonists where it hurts).

This may all fizzle out given capitulation by the government, or it may escalate...

@Crosbie, Google Maps (and Waze) haven't been reliable over the past weeks with road closures into Andorra. I've been recommending people use https://www.bison-fute.gouv.fr/ and https://www.inforoute09.fr/

Heavy traffic is expected at the start of the weekend as families head to ski resorts to celebrate Christmas.

Congestion is expected in all regions of France departing Paris and other major cities today Friday (December 19 ) with the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes facing very heavy traffic.

Farmers continue to block several motorways in France today (December 18 ) and are expanding protest action to access routes to ski resorts in the lead up to tomorrow’s Mercosur trade deal vote.

Yesterday saw at least 80 separate protests with more than 3,600 farmers across France protesting according to France’s Interior Ministry.

The map below shows where protests and road blockades took place throughout the day.

Early morning reports show farmers have not eased road blockades, with the A61, A64, A645, N21, and N125 in the south-west facing disruption.

"As long as we don't get a response from the government, a concrete response, we won't budge," said farmer and member of the Jeunes Agriculteurs union Alexandre Garcia, who is taking part in blockades of the A61, to FranceInfo.

I am hoping that this doesn't persist through Christmas, and that if it does, as I am driving on Christmas Day, the protestors can't be bothered to be there at the time...

@Harry Flashman, Keep an eye on traffic on Google/Waze etc and divert accordingly, in my (admittedly limited) experience there are always routes around, as they don't want to fall foul of the locals going about their business.

The EU and Mercosur are screwing over French farmers, so Germany can sell more cars.

Surprised the French haven't kicked off.

Transfer from Tignes to GVA yesterday was fine. Estimated time was 4 hours and we were there in 3.5 hours including pick up in Val d'Isere. No signs of any blockages.

What do the farmers propose to do when the infection spreads to the rest of the herd, and then neighbouring farms?

tbf, I do sympathise with Farmers over this issue, and see no reason why the rest of the herd can't be quarantined for a period, and tested again before culling.

However, the EU has always enforced the rules on us and, presumably, all other countries.

If UK farmers refused to cull infected cattle, they would ban imports of all our beef, but the French Government will probably capitulate as usual.
The rules are sacrosanct, except for when the French farmers object.
