Oh right, so you should use a gummy stone all the way along when preparing for recreational snow skiing? I did the base very lightly after the edge and couldn't feel it catching my nail so I thought that would do. To be honest, im more used to putting a burr on with a ceramic than I am prepping skis for snow. Ill have to pop up to the centre and get one tomorrow.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@Glosterwolf, Just happened to be doing some skis, run the gummy along the base edge tip to tail, make sure it's flat against the edge

@radar, thank you. Maybe next year!
No burr edge that I can feel.

Thank you all. @adithorp, what an excellent diagram thank you. Most of this thread could have been avoided had that appeared earlier

I feel some threads take time to develop, more like a fine wine. While some move into acerbic response, ultimately to vinegar.
Getting people to contribute with their knowledge, and then to further the discussion with constructive questioning etc, being positively productive here.
The initial question from you may not strike the same thoughts about it in all of us responding, the more elaborated journey does seem appreciated though, in this case.

Do ski shops actually check required angles against manufacturers specs or do they just use a geeric angles for base and edge - In particular the ones that use machines to do this? I’ve never requested specific angles and skis have been fine to date after a service.

Well, I think it is no surprise that customers do not know their edge angles or that ski techs just use factory/standard settings.
That said I would have thought many/most would benefit from increasing from the factory settings - would you agree @radar?

I have a pair of Stockli ARs. I either service them myself or entrust them to one specific servicer that I trust. He's set them up with a flatter base edge (1 degree) and 87 degree side edge. This makes them more 'grabby' than standard but I like that and they grip like crazy on hard piste/ice. I have a sticker on the skis that reminds him/me of the setup just in case we forget.
