Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Poster: A snowHead
Hello,

Im in the early stages of searching for a self catered chalet for next Dec just before Xmas, has to be 90min from GVA for 12+.

Can anyone point me to the best site to search, just thought id check here first as ive only ever really booked Sat-Sat packages via operators before.

Thanks.

Look on the resort website. Means you have to choose a resort first, but… Or VRBO (or Airbnb but it’s less popular with the French than VRBO, or booking.com).

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

The 90 minutes from Gva will limit your search to Flaine/Chamonix/St Gervais areas and rules out the Tarentaise. You will also be further limited if by "chalet" you mean a single building, rather than a big apartment.

A key metric is how many bedrooms you need.

If it's before Christmas it will rule out some smaller resorts which won't be fully open before Christmas week.

If you stretch your dates, and your 90 minutes, a bit, this place is excellent https://www.gites-de-france.com/fr/auvergne-rhone-alpes/savoie/le-gite-de-bisanne-73g317117?data-ori=ADSWFNGFEN&gad_source=5&gad_campaignid=19308078385&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIr9PRkva9kQMV0JlQBh2BBAm9EAAYAiAAEgLEC_D_BwE

but Les Saisies doesn't normally open fully before Christmas week. So really, I suppose it's not very suitable for you at all.....

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I use resort website or local agencies.

But you don't need to book before Sept/Oct.

We go Christmas week and book then.

If by "12+" you mean for 12 people plus - there will be very few options of that size, so yeah may need to book earlier in that case.

Good advice - I've booked big places several times, and it's not easy. The last one I booked there were 10 of us, and the place slept 12, but I demanded a single room (princess, but I was paying) and there was a "kids dormitory" with bunk beds so everybody fitted in without anybody on a sofa bed (indeed that place didn't have sofa beds, so that wasn't an option anyway). There were 5 bathrooms. Can't remember when I booked but it was long before September and we struggled to find anywhere. In many cases, as with that occasion, you can only fit in the theoretical maximum of people if they are all neatly couples, able to share doubles.

The end of stay extra cleaning fee was substantial but well worth it!!

No idea if it would help, but may be worth trying to find somewhere now and contact the owners/agency etc to see what the options are for booking for next year? They may be happy to reserve for a deposit?

Yes, that's good advice too. What are your actual dates? That will make a big difference.

We booked a place in Morzine earlier this year, although not for Xmas.

https://mountainspaces.com/

Had 6 bedrooms, boot room and hot tub. Got all the usual caveats about Morzine early in the season with snow coverage etc. Although easy enough to get over to Avoriaz if needed.
Transfer is within 90 mins of Geneva too.

Chalet itself was amazing. Really nice space and fairly short walk down to the centre of town and the Pleney lift to access the Morzine/Les Gets ski area

Chalet Brio in Samoens is lovely - but it's a short drive from the lifts

With needing (?) to be 90 mins away from GVA, and needing a large chalet for 12+, immediate thoughts were for Morzine. The Town large enough to have an array of accommodation options for your party size and with its very close links with Avoriaz (which you'll likely to be heading to most days that early in the season) via the Super Morzine gondola, it would fit the bill imo.

I've stayed here with a large group and its close proximity to the gondola made it ideal.
