 Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi everyone
I’m planning my first ski trip of the season and could use a bit of advice. I’m considering heading to the Alps in late January, but I haven’t decided on a resort yet. I’m mainly looking for:
• good conditions for intermediate skiers,
• reasonably priced accommodation,
• lively but not overcrowded atmosphere,
• and ideally some good off-piste options if snow is decent.
So far I’m looking at Les Arcs, Obergurgl, and Laax, but I’m open to other suggestions. If anyone has recent experience with snow conditions, accommodation tips, or general recommendations, I’d really appreciate your input.
Thanks in advance and looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

My suggestion is that this is not a good time to be deciding on a destination for a trip in 6 weeks time when the snow which fell earlier is rapidly disappearing and there's very little forecast in the reliable time frame...

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@Maryg11,
What style of accommodation? What budget? How many going?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Les Arcs a good call @Maryg11, as answering your demands. My preference would be 1800, but all location are good and maybe swayed by a particular deal on accommodation that could come up.
Ideal for the intermediate aspect, plus possibility of off piste along with generally very decent snow forecast coming to your "assistance " its as reliable as most choices generally.
I've not the experience with Austria, and leave that to others, but speaking to someone recently, and with my more extensive experience in LA, they did suggest Obergurgl to be ideal as somewhere to consider. On that basis, I'd look there too from that personal recommendation. Its certainly on my list to try it.

@Maryg11, as @Origen implied, it's impossible to predict the exact conditions 6 weeks hence, esp with current mild dry conditions prevailing acroos the whole Alps, but saying that decent snowcover in late Jan would usually be found in all 3 of those ski areas. I've not visited any of them personally, but I have friends who have and they certainly would be on my list as worthwhile places to visit.
In fact, in late January, you should be able to visit any of the 100's of ski areas in Europe that match those criteria, so you may have to narrow down the parameters a bit more.
We get quite a few open-ended enquiries on resort choice on here, then as folks start mentioning resorts and the thread continues, more and more criteria get revealed, so IME it's best to get your likes and dislikes out early!
Is there one of the 3 you mention that you're leaning towards? One where you have already found a good value offer?
Obergurgl is smaller than the other two and has a bit of an air of exclusivity about it.
Laax is a mecca for snowboarders, so jump parks and freeride are big there.
Les Arcs is just a great all-rounder and likely to be the busiest of the three.

I'm another one who recommends Les Arcs for what you are looking for....but haven't skied at your other choices, so can't make a comparison.

I've been to both Les Arcs and Laax and either would work well for you. No experience of Obergurgl but by reputation it should serve too.
I would probably slightly favour Les Arcs since as a purpose built resort you can stay in the middle of the ski area. With Laax you have to ascend to where the best of the skiing is, though overall the area has more character.
And I wouldn't too much worry about whether the early snow is melting a bit, things are overall better at this stage than they have been the last few years, and late January is a good bet regardless. You can't put much faith in weather forecasts beyond a few days ahead!

That's all very true but you say you want "good conditions" and conditions at the end of January (which is an ideal time to choose) are anybody's guess and it's highly improbable that they will be the same right across the hundreds of resorts in Italy, France, Austria and Switzerland.
Conditions will almost certainly be markedly better in some areas than others. I can't think of any good reason for narrowing down your choices now. You haven't said how you plan to travel. If flying, what I would do is book flights to one of the big "ski airports" then sit back and decide on which resort much nearer the time. If driving, the entire decision can be left till later.
