Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Val Gardena ski hire

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We a staying at the Hotel Alpino Plan in Val Gardena in January and was wondering if any regular visitors would kindly recommend a conveniently located ski hire shop or if there isn’t one nearby then perhaps one in town that also has locker facilities. The hotel doesn’t appear to be in the best location for piste and lift access so any advice would be much appreciated.

The guys in the Intersport across from Ciampinoi gondola are great. Solid range and swappable. There's great lockers at Ciampinoi. You can leave your skis in the Intersport too.

If you come across Killian, Marco or Stefan, tell them Sean the Scottish schnapps guy sent you. snowHead

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks for that. Sounds like the schnapps is worth a try and could get a little messy.

I cannot guarantee you'll be schnappsed. The policy has been tightened since they moved from the little shop at Costabella to the new big one at Ciampinoi. The little one was essentially a speakeasy.

Are you there with a Tour Operator? They might have an arrangement to get you sorted for ski hire. If not, it'll mean a walk into town as I don't think there's anywhere that does it in Plan.

As to piste and lift access, you can get in & out of the hamlet of Plan from the valley home run into Selva.

There is the river that separates the piste from the hamlet, but there's a bridge that will allow you access to the tiny Fungeia chair, that then gets you enough height to ski to the edge of Selva. The chair is about 400m from your hotel.

Coming home, if you take the valley run from Plan de Gralba twd Selva, just before the hamlet of Plan, there is another bridge across the stream and it's 300m from there to your hotel.

The skibus also stops outside your hotel, so you can get that up to Plan de Gralba or down to Selva village.

Hope that helps!! snowHead

@AdeyC, I've stayed at the Alpino several times ; Nearest ski hire is Scuola 2000 or Toni (both next to the Crystal Bridge).

Piste access - out of hotel and walk down hill, across car park and you are near the Funegia short lift from where you can ski to the Crystal bridge for the Costabella lift or a short walk to the Ciampinoi gondola :
For returning at the end of day, nearest piste to hotel is to ski down from Plan di Gralba on Funtanes piste - as you approach the Plan area and Hotel look for a load of flags off the your right ; get some speed up and swoop up the slope to the flags ; from there it is a downhill walk to the Hotel.
My favourite at end of day though is to come down same slope, take Funegia again and drop down to the Pra Valentini bar which will be 'popping' !!!

Walk back up to hill is steep tho'....... there is another bar half way up if needed Smile

Thanks for the replies. We are travelling with crystal however I normally source the ski hire independently to get the best deals. When we stayed in Canazai a few years ago we did use Crystal for our ski hire and it was a three day camel ride from our hotel so didn’t want a repeat of that.

We have skied through Val Gardena in both directions and visually fell for it. Historically we are regular visitors to the large French resorts and needed a change. Really looking forward to getting to know the area.

Ah yes, best sorting it independently then.

First time I went to Selva, Thomson had an arrangement with a local ski instructor who came and picked us up, fitted us out in his garage-cum-ski store and dropped us back with our equipment, but I expect those days are long gone.

Here is a map that might help you visualise where the pistes are in relation to the hotel as @albob and I described. It shows a piste crossing the bridge and running along the footpath almost reaching your hotel, but I think you would need to have had a lot of snowfall to get good coverage that far...

I came across a SkiSet discount code that gave me 10% off the other day (booked to stay in Morzine) but it might work for Val Gardena too. I'm not sure if there's a ski set shop near to your accommodation but just in case the code is Monsguide
