Reading through various threads and had a thought.
You take your car to the Alps or fly and pick up a hire car.
Assuming you are solo or the only driver how do you get the car back? ether home or back to drop-off.
Any time we have had a vehicle abroad or hired a car we have had two named drivers.

Breakdown recovery will arrange all this if you have the right sort of cover.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

After I was injured, and was my own as the sole driver (in my apartment, so no panic about getting home) my insurance would pay to fly me home, but not the car. But they agreed to fly a driver out instead. I pointed out that without two drivers we'd need an overnight stop and two hotel rooms, so they flew two drivers out (easyJet from Bournemouth, and taxi from Gva). My sister and brother in law came out to rescue me. If the car breaks down, then as @Chaletbeauroc says, it's your breakdown cover that comes into play. But it can be an almighty faff and a fair bit of uninsured expenditure and delay. And you can not guarantee getting a replacement car of the same size.
I've often rented a car on my own - if it breaks down, you and the car hire firm have to sort it out between you, I guess. I've not had a breakdown, but a substantial delay caused by a puncture, in a car with no spare. I was headed to Gva to pick up a friend, late at night. If I'd been flying I'd have missed the flight. The car hire place on the Swiss side of Gva stayed open to sort me out another vehicle. If the only driver is disabled the small print generally allows another driver to drive.
I think the AA 5 star breakdown service (or that's what it used to be called) provides a lot more cover but it costs a lot more money.

My breakdown insurance brought it back on a low loader. I had to leave the keys and the photocopy of the registration document where they could pick them up

Just to balance, you do need to check your breakdown cover because mine did not cover me for an injury when skiing (would have done if I'd been driving). My wife had to fly out and drive the car home.

I've no idea whether mine would have done - it didn't arise. I imagine not. That was down to my travel insurance. Mine was a cheap accident! Cost them considerably less than £1000 in total. Taking a vehicle home on a low loader must have been very expensive. Mine cost a couple of one way mid-week easyJet airfares and a taxi.

@jedster, my injury wasn't skiing but they didn't ask, I just told them I was injured and was the only driver

I phoned them up and they asked if the injury was from a car accident. I said no and they said I wasn't covered. My holiday policy didn't cover it either so flying out my wife was the least worse option. Like I said, need to consult the detail of the cover.

My holiday insurance took the sensible view that they would pay for my preferred option as long as it cost no more than flying me home would. I'd saved them a lot by staying on in France through the first part of the recovery, when I would have needed more assistance.

When my parents were both hospitalised in Spain and flown home on a private jet with medics in attendance we were prepared to fly out to drive their motorhome home - but didn't need to as their travel insurers arranged and paid for it to be transported home on a low loader. That along with the private flight and medical care made sure they were into lifelong profit on travel insurance!
