Hello,
I am travelling to Les Arcs in Jan, and we are taking our 2years & 11months old daughter.
The Piou Piou lessons start at 3 years old, I want to book these in and I will forge her DOB so I can book online.
My question is, do ESF ask for any passport or proof of age with bookings?
I just dont want her to miss out on it by being a month too young!
Thanks.
David.

You do have to add your daughter's date of birth to the booking. Are you really going to lie about this? Your daughter will most likely give the game away herself when asked how old she is by someone in the class, it is the sort of thin that people talk to children about. Your daughter may not be insured either if she is in an accident and the ski school are responsible.

@Hells Bells, Yes, I am planning to.
She is fully toilet trained and was on skis last winter without any lessons, she is definitely ready for it.
I have seen ESF in other resorts take kids from 2.5 years, but the Les Arcs site says from 3.
I will be ensuring she has insurance of course. I just didnt know if ESF check DOBs...?

French people have a sort of "family book" which sets out all their ages and things. I was once tasked to buy a family lift pass, for friends - 2 adults, 2 kids, but the adults weren't married. Had different names. I was asked whether they were genuinely a "family" - i.e. all lived under the same roof. Yes, I could answer honestly. The lift pass office demanded their "family book". I explained we didn't have such things in the UK. Eventually I got the pass because I'd been buying passes in that office for years, and I guess the woman trusted me.
If you daughter is "neely free" that's what she's likely to reply, if asked her age. If you're determined to lie about her age I think I'd arrange for an early birthday, complete with friends around, a cake with candles, and much discussion about how grownup 3 is.

It may be worth an enquiry to book not over the internet. They may be a bit tolerant of the fudge over the phone/email rather than the website if you say “she’s days away from being 3” etc.
In a quiet week they may want the booking and can bend the rules in a way that the website booking can’t.
Or you might find out it’s strict as its insurance based and then at least you know the consequences of your little white lie.
Obviously do the enquiry under a fake name so if they do say “non” at least you can still lie on your actual booking if you want to.
And probably do the enquiry in French, they’re more likely to say yes then!

I think we did similar when one of ours was 5years and 11 months and wanted him in the 6 and over proper go skiing lessons with his siblings rather than in the Piou Piou on his own and with a load of 3yos (and probably 2yos lying about their age! ).
Don’t recall entering an incorrect DOB, maybe the website wasn’t as sophisticated or maybe the resort we picked allowed a bit of leeway. Or maybe I did just lie.
Either way nothing bad happened, and the ESF teachers certainly didn’t have the time, English skills or patience to ask my child how old he was.
And he learned how to ski!

You mean while we were slogging our guts out learning helpful French phrases:
"Quel âge avez-vous" and other classics like,
"Quelle heure est-il?"
"Je m'appelle Joe, comment tu t'appelles?"
"Où est la gare"
they werent learning the same in English class? How disappointing.

Insurance is about trading liability down the chain until the buck stops. If your daughter was injured in an ESF lesson there would most likely be a conversation between your own winter sports insurer and the ESF insurer about liability and who was ultimately responsible. If it was subsequently discovered that you were in any way dishonest to ESF about your daughter's age then it has the potential to have consequences for your own insurance.
I wouldn't do it, I would have an honest conversation ESF about the situation and if it works it works.

@NoMapNoCompass, that was my point, that it wasn't just about the insurance you take out, but also the insurance of the ski school should an unexpected event happen. The age limit is there for a reason.

And insurance generally depends on "full and honest disclosure". Your daughter is unlikely to be covered by any insurance if she is taking part in an activity for which she is not qualified.

 You know it makes sense.

It might be possible to get some 1 to 1 private lessons - she'll learn fast. There's often not that much skiing going on in Piou Piou.

Ive been in contact with ESF, they are happy to take the booking at her age. If for whatever reason the instructor thinks she is too young or not ready, we can just use the balance paid for the week of morning piou piou for some private lessons, as they start these from 2 yrs old!
Thanks for the advice, as I probably wouldve just booked it and forged the DOB and then had a slight worry it may not work out!

Great to hear it's worked out. I suspected they'd be fine for the sake of a couple of weeks, but I find that it's always best to be upfront about these things. Have a fabulous week away!
