I dont think its unreasonable.
Many of these areas are already covered in litter once the snow melts, and fag ends just add to that.

Just wondering how this might be enforced in a ski area though.

The smoking ban in restaurants etc was observed fairly well when it was brought in - so this ban probably will be, too. It sends a clear message. Dog fouling similarly - although people still complain when people ignore the rules, most people do pick up - and everybody thought that was ridiculous too, when the rules first came in. I suppose it will be "enforced" in part by social pressure and disapproving looks. And some people will speak up if someone lights up on a chairlift. Local school kids clear up fag ends after snow melt at the end of the season - it will be good to see their numbers drop. I remember, as a little girl, asking my mother what "no spitting" signs meant on busses. And pissing in the street used to be acceptable too......

The smoking ban inside restaurants may well have been observed but the smoking ban on the terraces outside was completely ignored. That ban was for terraces outside bars as well & I can assure you they all smoke freely

No. Absolutely not. But littering in any way is not acceptable. If you smoke it is your responsibility to take away any litter. I don't smoke, never have, but to stop others smoking when outside is also not ok if it doesn't cause an issue to others.
I am all for stopping it on chair lifts. Personally I do not particularly care, I have never been on a chair lift when someone has caused me or anyone else an issue by smoke blowing over me/them, and if there was then it would not be acceptable. But of course, I am sure it happens. (The perpetrators of this will no doubt ignore a ban anyway!)

I'm not sure most of them will ignore a ban. The majority are probably not even aware that they are causing others problems in that sort of situation, they aren't willfully causing those issues.
There will be some who just ignore it of course, as there are with almost every legal restriction.

There’s been enough publicity for many years about the negative effects of passive smoking for people to be aware of that.
Pros and cons, as always. I guess with the trend for increased use of vapes, there’ll be more plumes of smelly vapour around instead. Possibly more plastic litter too?
Interesting to see how much it will be enforced.

I was in Lech once, and just me and another chap got on to a chair. He proceeded to make a roll-up, and just as it went in his mouth, and he reached for his lighter, I said "You're not going to light up on this chair." in a Jason Statham kind of way. He shrugged and put it away in readiness for disembarkation.
I don't even mind smokers on adjacent tables when al fresco dining, but it's not good to be trapped with a smoker, when you were expecting a fresh mountain breeze.

1. I’m pro the principle of smoking. (But not near me.)
2. I’m bemused as to why smokers think it acceptable to drop their non-DM for info or use link in bio to website and search -degradable butts.
3. An Italian instructor I once had in France smoked on the lifts as we were going up. That was not very nice. He was rubbish anyway, I learned more skiing from the strangers in the chalet I was staying in than I did from him.

Not sure the last time I smelt Gauloise or any other tobacco smoke coming from a liftie. Smoke yes, just not tobacco.

Have heard rumours that vaping is also being picked up on, though on a resort by resort basis - €135 fine being quoted by one person

It's going to be a bit hard to enforce on lifts it the smoker finishes before the top. Some Gondolas have cameras, but are they constantly monitored?
No chance on a chair.
On the spot fines for all communal areas. All for it.

@SBP, I thought it was still OK to vape, but they were looking at lowering the maximum allowed nicotine.

May be hard to enforce, but it lends a huge amount of weight to someone who may not wish to be forced to sit next to someone smoking on a lift but previously just had to put up with it if the person doing it was just ignorant rather than wilfully flouting a rule.

There was never a ban on smoking on restaurant terraces. Even now with the new law it's still allowed, although I can imagine an increase in local/house rules to limit it to designated areas only.

Yes, that was my understanding. Though I would find somebody who was clearly loudly drunk more unacceptable than someone quietly smoking a cigarette. Fortunately in the places I mostly skied it was vanishing unusual.

There won't be much change, TBH. Cabins of all types have always (well, for decades) been no smoking anyway, and anyone breaking the rules is likely to continue to do so, but I haven't seen anyone, or smelt evidence of, smoking in cabins for a very long time.
As for chair lifts, I have been known to have one myself if I'm alone on a chair, but I always carry an ashtray pouch, would never dream of throwing a butt on the ground, not from a chair lift, not on the street, not anywhere. I doubt if anyone will bother trying to enforce it in those sort of situations anyway, as long as nobody's having to breath anyone else's smoke, nobody's throwing their butts on the ground, I doubt anyone will be bothered.

I've been in charge of a litter group on several occasions at the Open golf at Sandwich in the past. Picking up huge numbers of discarded cigarette ends is a disgusting job. I'm fully in favour of a ban.

I object to the sickly sweet horrible smell of vapes more than I do tobacco smoke so I hope they are banned, in fact ban them from everywhere!

Oh no the relentless march of absolutely solid evidence-based public policy. We will be eating better food and living longer if humankind is not careful.
Only took 70 years from the first point at which the evidence was finally promoted rather than suppressed.
Danger - this article contains facts which are almost certainly true.
