Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Half term this year, I wandered up to the hire shop with the family and only realised when I got there that I'd left my boots in the apartment. But at least they were in France with me and it was resolved with a quick dash back.

Also, I have found my people in carrying teabags. I always have a stash in my bag, even in the UK.
I once made a cup of tea to take out with me, in my travel mug. I took a photo of it on the Transarc and sent it to a friend saying 'spot the Brit abroad'. I often ski with a backpack, so it was safely stowed afterwards.

A must have item on my packing list is a 4 gang plug. Saves a lot of bother. We use it on the train, too.
When going by train, we take our mega-cases, so can fit food items, too. We usually take a couple of bags of pasta, and Weetabix as pasta and cereal are so expensive in France.

Photos of our passports are saved in a folder in my email and have also been emailed to Mr. O, just in case I can't access mine.

Foldable bucket and spade if you have young children.

For packing fails, I completely forgot to put my snowboard bindings in the car one year - ended up having to *shudder* rent some in resort... huge great things that looked like Noah lashed a Xebu to the deck of the ark with, yet still managed to feel loose and rubbish...

Got back and there they were sitting in the hall with a "Papa, are we going to the snow now?" look on their face. I must've stepped over them a dozen times when packing the car up. Unbelievable.

Also take a photo’ of your GHIC, in case you forget/lose it. There’s no RFID chip in it - all the A&E administrator actually needs is the information on it.

Ditto your passport and Driver’s License. If your wallet is lost or stolen, then the former will be helpful when you contact the lost passport helpline at the Passport Office. Also know what to do and the tel no of credit card companies, again, for if your wallet is lost/stolen.

I'd put the drivers licence & passport earlier on, but the GHIC good too.

Which brings up another (although not to pack for journey) the receipt for your lift pass, as this will allow you to get a lost one cancelled and re-issued should you be unfortunate enough to do that.
Not many realise this can be easily done and either discard the receipt or unable to find that too.

I've got similar, but the 21st century version. Full spreadsheet with a drop-down menu for whether I'm taking it or what bag it's in (because I will definitely forget) and a tick box for when I've packed it. So far it's worked and I've not forgotten anything important

I'm another one who is always armed with tea bags.

One place I worked near Geneva had a French office manager and she had ordered boxes upon boxes of the dreaded Lipton's Yellow Label, with all good intentions as when I asked her about it she said she thought that that was the brand that all the British liked as she always saw it everywhere in cafes in France & CH.

I think they sell it all over Europe because nobody in the UK would buy it.

PG Tips for us, and when going together my wife & I always take a supply with us. I tend not to bother when traveling alone (as is normal for ski trips), because I don't mind drinking coffee most of the time if there is no acceptable tea.

++50 tea bags, not particularly fussed which, as long as they're not decaf ;-{

But also a shout-out for Barley Cup, is what it says on the jar (barley, rye, chicory 'cereal drink') but an excellent substitute for coffee if that has undesirable effects...

I struggle without tea, especially first thing in the morning and can happily just drink tea if there is no acceptable coffee, or if it involves too much faff with machines which then need a lot of washing up. Tea is so gloriously simple. Did try Barley Cup once, many, many, years ago. It proved to be one of those jars which sat on the shelf till it was so far past its sell by date that it went in the bin.

Actually for any tea addicts you can get a really good cuppa from the place next to the transfer bus 'booths' after you exit the baggage hall at Geneva airport.

PG Tips for me, too. I take mine black, no sugar so it is so simple to make, but because of this, I'm fussy about which teabags. I used to be able to ask for hot water at the aires to keep me going on long journeys, but they've cottoned on now, and charge me for a cup of tea, but tell me to take the teabag separately. So it costs me about €3.50 every time. One place in Arc 1800 did me a cup of hot water for €1 once which I didn't mind.

I have a checklist also, and each trip I tweak to reduce the amounts down where possible, it’s been needed when flying with EasyJet and Ryanair on the same trip, using 1 bag with my boots in it and everything else, the 3 kg difference is critical.

I was 15 minutes down the road a few years back before realising I'd left my ski jacket behind. I'm only 45 minutes from Folkestone so this did mean going back for it was cutting things fairly fine for booked train as I don't generally need to allow for potential delays en route. Obviously not a major problem as would just be put on next one.

I now always pack a collapsible shovel and insulated waterproof work gloves after freezing my fingers to the bone and getting drenched digging the car out at the end of trip. Luckily a kindly Frenchman was good enough to give me one of those plastic kiddies bum-board things to help.

Ah but there's the princess to consider!

I panic about buying the wrong ones when I'm in Boots, let alone buying them in a pharmacy abroad with different brands and all the writing in french.
