Hey, just wanted to know what is your experience with traveling with skibag on trains from Zurich airport and further.
Im traveling to Innsbruck. Normally I place a bag in front in bagging area, but I also sometimes to the next seat on the side, in a two seated row.
Cheers Ed

There are sometimes areas specifically to put skis on the trains. Or they can go overhead if the bag fits. All depends how busy the train is - you can use SBB app to get an indication.

You won't have a problem. Trains from the airport, and to the mountains, will have ample baggage space, often specific racks to stand skis upright.

@ed48, The trains from Zürich to Austria are usually very busy, make sure you reserve a seat even in first class. It is unlikely you will be able to use the seat next to you. There are plenty of luggage racks but on busy trains they fill up (though easier if you get on in Zürich as that's where the trains start). There is the overhead rack too but these are more for rucksacks than larger ski type bags. Assuming it is an Austrian RJ train (there are occasional Swiss trains), there are spaces for skis / bikes in many of the carriages. There have been a number of comments, especially from those travelling in a group, of struggling to fit all the bags in. Best use the OEBB app https://www.oebb.at/ to book a seat (you dont have to buy a ticket at same time) and pick a carriage with ski storage.

have done this journey when we skied st Anton with our flights being into Zurich, we got the train from Zurich HBF and found that the key was to arrive early / in good time. if you can get onto the carriage early, then plenty of space.
We had booked first class and there was plenty of space.
FYI I was travelling with a double coffin style bag so plenty BIG!

A general question to Snowheads regarding train legs to/from the Alps. This could be in any country en route.
Where your case or skibag has to stored out of sight from your seat and there are various train station stops along the way, do you ever check on your gear? Or calmly forget about it (theft/mistakes just don’t happen in these circumstances).
I do regularly check and I noticed continentals do too e.g. on recent journeys Moûtiers from/to Lyon. Sometimes we’re on the top deck, gear by the exit doors on the floor below.

@Snow&skifan, some services have lockable luggage racks (you need a 1 euro coin in Austria, I doubt much gets nicked in Switzerland). Otherwise, keep it within view if possible, and secure an Airtag inside somewhere if you want to keep track of it. Theft incidence is low though, so don't worry too much, but take basic precautions as you would anywhere.

Get there early for the Railjet. End of carriage or I've had a coffin roller on the overhead rack before I think.

In UK and anywhere/ everywhere else I never let any of my stuff out of my sight in those types of circumstance. I would find the stress of doing otherwise - of hoping no one decides to steal my stuff - too much to bear. I'm relaxed when I travel, but only because I'm in control.

I think the bigger risk is taken by mistake.
Perhaps put a cow bell on the bag?

Great advices here, many thanks, its going to be train on Monday RJX 165 so may be less busy?
Im super nervous for my bags in bagging area, but I think its good idea to use simple cable lock.
Will check the train on the app and purchase the seat.
Its first time Im on train from Zurich, normally Im flying into Innsbruck and its a short ride just couple of stations to Otzal, Landeck or StAnton.

@Snow&skifan, there isn't much choice on a TGV, as the luggage is out of sight in the vestibule. I wouldn't leave my luggage near the exit if I could help it though, and wouldn't leave it downstairs if I'm upstairs - on a TGV at least, there is very little luggage space downstairs, so really not helpful if people from upstairs use it. I don't bother too much about my luggage once I've set off - life is too short - I still consider it much safer than I would handing it over to baggage handlers in an airport.

@ed48, Maybe Monday will be less busy but I have found it is often very busy between Zürich and Buchs (last stop in Switzerland). Never had a concern about leaving my bag in the rack but a cable lock would work. Just as easy from Zürich as from Innsbruck, Landeck & Ötztal can be reached with regional trains from Innsbruck but St Anton is pretty much only the trains that go on to Zürich (every 2 hours).

Live report from actual train About 30% occupied, the 10:40 one. I booked seat opppsite of storage place, but it appeared to be more sutable for suitcases , not enougth width for a ski bag. It went to overhead no issues. Epic views along the lake. So all good.

Now @ed48, question seems to be sorted...
Where's the best place to book Swiss rail tickets? SBB site? I'm traveling Zurich to CransMontana (Sierre) on 27th Dec.

Im booking on qbb.at for years, saving ticket on the phone, no issues. Im booking the whole route, like Zurich Flughafen to Solden, it gives me singke ticket for all changes. One advice here is to screenshot the jorney iterary, as I domt have swiss roaming and rhe app needs internet connection , but works fine offline for tickets thought.

@adithorp, I have the ÖBB, SBB and DB apps on my phone. I'll always check each app depending on where I'm going. For example, on Thursday I took the train to Munich Airport from Jenbach, so I checked ÖBB and DB and even though it was a ÖBB train, it was cheaper to book via DB.

For some reason the luggage issue is a big problem in long distance trains in Europe - my experience is that space is always an issue on busy days. It's like they expect most passengers to be day trippers. I like to try to book a seat near the end of the carriage so I can keep an eye on my luggage at each stop but it's not always possible. From experience be aware of thieves at Zurich wandering the trains looking for any small unattended bag. Don't let anything below suitcase size out of your sight.
As above the SBB.ch and OBB scotty site scan give different prices for the same train.

OBB site is coming in cheaper than SBB but not by much (once I've converted currencies). I can understand it for cross border travel but mine is wholly SBB/Switzerland

I have often found ÖBB cheaper by a couple of Euros than DB for Munich - St Anton. App is easier to use as well.

This is usually the case when I look too, but the train I've booked from Munich airport to Jenbach tomorrow evening is €22 with DB but was about €45 with ÖBB.
