Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Best ski waist width for Banff

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Heading to Banff end of feb and wondering what the best waist width ski to take. Is 88mm enough? Got caught out in whistler 2 years ago where we underestimated and had to rent as there was loads of powder and it cost a fortune. Lucky enough to have a few pairs in the family to choose from, 80mm 88mm 92mm 96mm 102mm what would you choose? No double black diamonds only single but like exploring. Favourite skis are 88mm Nela 88’s but they are not the best powder skis Eh oh!Eh oh!

Wait till you're about to leave the house and look at the forecast before deciding? Otherwise the question is impossible to answer (and that's ignoring that waist width doesn't tell you everything about a ski's characteristics)

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Can't you get 2 pairs in your ski bag?

Yes actually that’s a good idea to check (do that for alps) and yes that’s another thought to take two pairs. We were caught out in Whistler and didn’t appreciate before we left exactly how impressive their inbounds ski area was in terms of “off piste skiing” stuff we’d use avy gear for. It was like a playground. I had heard Banff was slightly different in that it was dryer and unless you were skiing super expert terrain got tracked out quickly

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

If you're bringing 2 pair (which I would), then bring the 88 and 102. If you can only bring one, I'd go with the 96.

I believe all ski hills get tracked out quickly these days. But at least the dry stuff doesn't pack into hard lumps...

Happy on my 90mm in all conditions - so I'd go with either the 88 or 96 if one pair - TOLOCOMAN, suggestion is good advice, if able to take a couple of pairs.

Will be out that way this season again, mid Feb through to mid March Madeye-Smiley

Last Feb I took the faction skis, I think they’re 90mm. They were too wide if anything because it hadn’t snowed for 2 weeks before or even during our stay. I spent the 10 days wishing I’d just taken the piste bashers.

Did quite a bit of the double black stuff on offer but it was crusty as……

This year going in April so be good to see if that makes any difference snow wise.

Last year was one of our worst snow years ever. Off to a much better start this year.

But for someone that is wanting to ski off piste, I still wouldn't recommend a ski much under 90mm no matter how long it has been without snow.
