Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Snow conditions in December

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hey, we're looking to go ski-ing in mid December, unfortunately duw to holidays we can't go after new year which is when both of us have been before, basically we're looking at high French resorts primarily Alpe d'Huez and La Plagne to maximise our chances of good(ish) snow conditions. Has anyone any particular good experiences of resorts at this time of year or any recommendations...?

Welcome to snowheads!

The question has been asked frequently, and the answer is always: Book late, so you know snow conditions. Accomodation mid december is generally not hard to get.

If you HAVE to book soon, pick a resort with a glacier to have any reliability of skiing something.

Remember that high resorts also generally means rocky runs which need a lot of snowcover. A lower resort, lets look at Wengen snowHead is scheduled to be mostly open as early as 9th of december. They only need some 30 cm to cover up the grassy slopes.

michaelonline, Given recent years (being no guide except as to how unreliable anywhere can be) I'd suggest Val d'Isere/Tignes. Might be great/might not...

Soelden (austria) usually have the best conditions in Alps on early december. With two glaciers, and 30km of runs. Last season they opened 40km mid novembre.
Other possibility is Pyrennes,..I had a good week of ski on early december last year, in french resort (like La Mongie, Cauterets, Piau Engaly; more than 100cm of snow in ground).

michaelonline, welcome to Snowheads snowHead

Go high in France if you must, but recent historical records indicate that Austria has had the best early season snow...

(Of course 2006 may create a change to the pattern)

More than 1 meter of snow in first week of december is not typicall. But is not unusuall. Last five seasons the open day has been in last week of NOvembre in all Pyrennes. You must know that the Western Pyrenees have the greater winter precipitation of Europe surpassing the 10 meters of fallen snow.
Other example is Baqueira Beret which have the rainiest month in November (in high elevations is snow). Second month in ranking is december.
