 Poster: A snowHead
|
So I posted a while back about a short trip again with my weeun in march.
I *think* I’ve narrowed it down to the above, I like the idea of the train transfer.
Does anyone know the resorts well?
It’s quite difficult to work out the logistics, well probably not that difficult but it’s likely easier to ask someone in the know. Ideally I don’t want to be getting a bus to get to a lift on a morning. Do any of these resorts require bussing to lifts? I’m trying to find accommodation that is 1) close to lift 2) close to gare - to make for last day of skiing easier. I’m assuming I can hire kit somewhere?
Are they all well serviced by regular trains? I am assuming the train from GVA will be simple to achieve to any of them - probably need to know if not!
Advice appreciated.

Hi, I can help with Villars - you've two options, either get the tram up from the middle of the town (we've stayed twice at https://www.alpe-fleurie.com which is almost opposite) or you can get the Roc d'Orsay gondola up (on the edge of the town) - just depends where your accommodation is. Villars is great for a short trip. There's a 'post bus' that runs from the town down to the valley.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

For Champery the main lift is literally outside the railway station. If you are close to there you won't need a bus.

My recommendation is solely based on one fact @v1cky24, from les diablerets you have the option to take the bus to Col du Pillon for the Glacier 3000.
This is well worth doing, the pistes are wide open motorways with normally very good snow. Other than that the skiing is linked into Villars, with the main lift out of les d' a 10 person gondola.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@v1cky24, Answering the train access question. From GVA it's a train to Aigle and then a transfer onto a dinky little mountain train up to Les D. The connection in Aigle is very easy with a set of dedicated platforms for the mountain trains. It starts off as a sort of tram going through the town before getting onto "proper" train tracks for the rest of the journey.
I've only been to Les D once and that was about 10 years ago. It's a bit spread out so look at Google maps for location of your accom options vs. the lifts.

Les D is a lot quieter than Villars and has Glacier 3000 as it's Ace but it's at least 500m to the gondola from the nearest accomodation and the home run has, what might be, a few tricky sections for your weeun near the bottom. Villars is a cruise down.

Thanks for the intel. Appreciate it. Weeun is a reasonable skier, I say weeun in jest - she’s 5’9
I find it quite difficult to work out where the lifts are from the maps sometimes.

Resurrecting this one.
Champery seems to be out as the accommodation I was looking at has now doubled in price
I just need to pick now between Les D and Villars.

Les d for convenience to Glacier 3000 @v1cky24, you won't regret it.
I am over that way next week, my mate lands in Lenk tomorrow lunchtime so it will be Gstaad or Glacier.

I prefer LD to Villars, something about he feel of the place. It's damned shame that the other side of it (whatsitcalledagain?) closed.
Champery/PdS has wayyyy more extensive skiing than LD/V, if you needed this.
You can get the train to a lot of other swiss ski places, by the way, Verbier, Zermatt, Grindelwald/Murren (iirc), davos, to name a few. that said, there's nothing wrong and a lot to like about your choices above.

@snoozeboy, Isenau. There is a very organised and well funded community project to reopen the Isenau area including the gondola and drag lifts, but it will be members only. The mountain restaurant is open now I think for foot access.
You can join for a few hundred chf's.

@snoozeboy, so for context, I went last year to Verbier and we stayed in le chable and had a great time and a very nice trip at all went smoothly using the train from Geneva Airport. This is a very short trip so I don’t want excessive transfer times. Using the train was big contributing factor as I don’t much like paying €€€ for transfers. PDS was my first thought as we’d probably cover a lot of kms but I can’t seem to make that work! Looking at morgins as another option but seems I’ll have to bus it from aigle or one of the train stations in the valley!
