Heading to Tignes (Val Claret) in March. Have been exclusively going to Austria for a good few years now so a bit out of touch with French prices. Realistically how much will a large (500ml)beer cost me in Tignes?

@kb36, How much beer are you going to drink v the cost of your ski trip (travel, accommodation, food, ski pass/hire etc....)? I get that it's nice to know but it's probably a rounding error in the overall cost.

UK Pint 568ml. French Pinte 500ml. Spanish Jarra 440ml.
You'll probably find that £10 for a UK pint is roughly the same cost per ml as a 10€ pinte.
Amazingly, beer in Spain is still pretty cheap, una Jarra is often under 5€.

@kb36, haven't been to Tignes for a while, but did L2A at Easter and baulked at the €10 for a plastic cup of some bland French beer at the lift station eatery. Wasn't much different down in resort - knocking €10 in some resort pubs although we did feel like we'd found a cheat code when we got pint of St Stefanus for €6 in a fancy glass (fancy glass happened to find its way home with me).
I'm heading to Austria this Christmas on the promise of €5 steins

Most Happy Hour in Tignes places will do Le Pint for between €5 and 6 (last season). I prefer better quality craft beer (such as @Timlongs’ Lost in the Woods). That was €8 a pint last year. At my local in York Timmy Taylor’s Landlord is £5.50 so really not worth worrying about.

It used to be the case that Norway (and the rest of Scandinavia) was much more expensive than the rest of Europe for beer / alcohol. However if your taking about ski resorts, then there isn't much difference to Norway and the larger french ski resorts based on anecdotal evidence, given the propensity of the later to jack up their prices for a captive market.

The good thing about 10€ per pinte is that you can hand out notes without having to worry about change (for those few still using the folding stuff).

Well in Hemsedal last season it was £17 a pint, which is quite a difference.

If it's still €10 for a (metric) pint and €6-€8 in seasonaire bars, then that's a bargain. They were the same numerical prices 10 years ago, and everything else has gone up in price quite a bit since.
Last time I was there, I got a 10¢ coin as change from a €10 note.

I was paying just shy of 10€ for a large Leffe in Le Grand Bornand last Feb.
A pint at my local place in the UK charges £5+ a pint anyway. I'd pay that price difference to be drinking in the Alps any day.

Err - up the mountain it was more like €15 a pint last season in most places, and I think Le Palet was €17 for something green (and horrible).

Yes, but Leffe versus an English bitter? Who can actually drink 500ml of Leffe? I could only manage a single 250 ml glass of Leffe in an evening whereas quite a bit more Ruddles Best so the Leffe will result in a cheeper night out.
Incidently IIRC L'Abreuvoir charges 4€ for a standard beer and 8 for a large one, but once again IIRC less during happy hour and more on some nights.

By the pint, Leffe is a bit of a 'knock-out' or 'go sleepy-bies' drink. If I have a pint, I tend to make it the last one (cos it will be anyway).
Mützig is comparable in strength, and has a reputation as an infamous apres-ski beer. See https://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=137356

£10 a pint? Depending on which pub I pay £3.90, £3.78 or £2.50 a pint for cask ale (less in Spoons, especially Monday - Friday).

Landlord is the top priced cask in the King's Head, Huddersfield at £4.40 (serves you right for drinking in the capital). Most of their other 10 cask beers at £3.90.

I've just checked our accounts for the last few ski trips. Feb 2024 when we were in Soll. A round of 4 large beers in The Mill was around £17.50. Not sure if that was during a happy hour though. The dearest round of beers was just shy of £20. Funnily enough we were paying around the same for 4 large beers in the bars in Soldeu this year and in Val Gardena in 2023.

@Kenzie, Weatherspoons is rather the exception. I don't visit the UK that often, but earlier this year, some premium lagers i had were up to £9 in London.

I was in Mirkdalen last year for a week or so, they weren't that price there.

Anyone trying to compare Spoons prices to the alps is always going to be sorely disappointed.
Last 2 trips to Norway (Trysil) and I have been paying around £10 for a bottle of local craft ale. Around £10 a pint of lager. Not ever paid £17 a pint. Maybe that was a one off @orange?

I was in Val Claret this Easter - didn't pay too much attention to the price of beers as it is what it is, but it definitely felt a bit pricier than previous visits to VT. My local pubs are all £7+ so kind of used to getting shafted on drinks prices tbh.

It does beg the question that if they can do it...
i.e. most pubs in London a pint starts with £7.XX. At the O2 your charged around £9. At the Wetherspoons in the O2 shopping centre its under £3 a pint.

But does it? Is it not obvious? Do you really want nice independent locals to be like a Wetherspoons pub? Personally, I absolutely do not. Getting something cheap does not mean it is better. You are buying a different product as the beer itself is only part of it, the venue and all that it entails is the other part. I would rather drink less beer and sit in a nice pub with a nice landlord/lady served by nice bar staff than a Wetherspoons. But that is just me, we are all different of course.

I cannot recall the price of beer in SuperU but at Tesco, Adnams Ghost Ship (a repectable beer) is £4.50 per litre. I imagine SuperU is not much different (except of course the beer is much worse). As someone once told me you are paying for the place to be served and drink it in.

Yes its does
Whilst your points on ambiance and atmosphere are valid (albeit some Wetherspoons are very nice, they have in the past made a point reviving some great old buildings etc, but their low prices do draw a certain crown in some places)
...their operating costs are not half those of other pubs, yet their prices are. They are clearly run incredibly efficiently and they purchase well and their volumes sold per Sq ft I imagine are among the highest in the industry.
Both have a place - your independent local and the tow centre Wethies.
